What are some movies where either the special affects are either so bad that they make your eyes bleed, or that are just really overrated. My two are Titanic, which I find is pretty much the crappiest movie ever, and E.T., which is pretty much just a horrible movie with no real plot, and no character development.

Now that you bring it up, your right. I haven't really thought about it, but for a nearly 20 year old movie it aged incredibly well.

I disagree with the Titanic, from a technical standpoint it's still a superb film, even by today' standards.

Most movies from before 1960(ish) for me. I just can't take the overacting and very basic directing/editing.

Nearly any action flick from the 1960s to early 1970s. They almost always enter the realm of unintentional hilarity when viewed today. Poorly chosen stock sound effects (many from the 40s and 50s) almost constantly permeate them, music is generally cringe-inducing, the action scenes themselves are often awkwardly shot and performed etc. etc. There are, naturally, exceptions to this (Dirty Harry, for starters), but the vast majority are exactly what I described.

I can only watch a few minutes of that movie at a time, then I have to go do something else because it's so boring.

Near Dark. raven_squad

Near Dark had the same problem as The Terminator. They were both embarassingly "80s". Terminator gets a slight pass, though, since at least it was specifically supposed to be set in a certain year. But Near Dark was just sort of set in the present. Only if you go back and watch the movie 20 years later, it looks ridiculous.

Have not seen Near Dark, but I thought Terminator aged rather well. Saw it just a year ago.

The only thing that comes to mind right now is We're Back: Dinosaurs story!
The embassasingly 90's story seems far worse than the 80's vibe I get from other movies (such as terminator).
Not to mention that the Land Before Time had so much more going for it in terms of story, even though they both featured Cartoon Dino's.

The Birds - a lot of people think its a really deep movie but the first half is frankly, diabolical. It tries to be this light rom-com and it just doesn't work at all. I'm actually looking forward to the remake to see if they can completely rework the early portions of the movie.

I thought this movie was hilarious; now it's just ... bad.

Though that scene was a breakthough for a very young Chris Rock.

Super Mario Bros. Although it was pretty crappy when it came out but today it looks ten times worse. Short Circuit is something I haven't seen in years but I'm scared to look at it because I may crack up looking at the effects. Usually when it comes to older movies it's better if they wasn't to special effects heavy. I could watch Bruce Lee films all day because they were pure marital arts masterpieces.

Back to the Future 2, while not a bad movie at all (actually one of my favorites), deserves a mention only because of the fact that it was set in 2015. Here it is 2011 and we can see there's no way we're going to have flying cars or Hover Boards in the next four years (even if we had the technology there's no way we would allow flying cars in a post 9/11 world anyway until we can do at least a remote kill switch when people try to use it to break the law that we can't just override). But that's the reality of movies based on the future. Makes you wonder how accurate movies being released now that are based hundreds of years in the future will be looked at when the time period portrayed in the movie becomes the present.

Hitchcock's The Birds.

When you clearly see how fake the birds are by how they maneuver, the horror is replaced with some straight up comedy.

Well, to be frank I came in to say The Birds too, first movie that sprung up to mind. (still enjoyable through the nostalgia goggles though) I'm going to go with 'It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad World' then. The whole movie, while funny, looks like it takes place on a world made of cardboards (Gas Stations WTF?).

I actually just watched this film a couple months ago. I used to think silent films were really difficult to watch but I ended up liking them and now I really enjoy them. I love this film although the acting isn't great.

Psycho.

It just doesn't deliver what it originally set out to do. Watching it felt, well, pointless because it just had nothing left to offer, in my opinion. There's just no way I could get excited, captivated or scared over it, just like most other old-school thrillers and horrors. They've aged to the point of redundancy.
