My company is going to be moving me to a border town in Mexico.  Not being a U.S. citizen, I will probably live on the Mexican side of the boarder.  I can't speak a word of spanish so as you can imagine I'm a bit worried as to  how accepting the general population will be.  I've hear that this town has a robust middle class so I'm sure all the amemneties I need will be available.  I was wonder what experience some of you have had and if you have any advice to give.

Some how I have a feeling that this won't be a lively thread.

My Company did something similar. First off....you don't want to live there....It's a third world Country.  It wouldn't take much for one of the poor people to go after the "rich Gringo"....YOU

But on a good note, the people I met were great, very friendly and good workers. They make really great Margaritas too

Come on people.  Don't pretend to be ignorant.  I'm sure like many "third world countries", Mexico has it own problems; however, there is probably a lot more to it than what we get from the media.  I have traveled to some places that have worse reputations than Mexico and I found them to be suprisingly pleaseant places to visit.

Anyway, regardless of what happens, it will be a new experince for me and I'm looking forward to it.

Not all mexicans are poor criminals and not all of Mexico is what you so condescendingly call the "third world"...

Not speaking spanish shouldn't scare you. Thousands of Mexicans come to the US every year and they don't know how to speak the language.

Who said ALL Mexicans are poor criminals.
As for being a third world country....take out the resorts ( which only cater to foreigners ) and Mexico is very much a third world Country, you must have never been there. Get off your high horse while trying desperatly to sound PC-ish

Ok guys.  Let's not take this too seriously.  I just wanted advice from people not arguments.  I know nohabs wasn't trying to defame Mexico or Mexican.  As he says in his pervious post, Mexicans  are friendly and hard working people.  I was only looking to have people give me, a non Spanish speaker, some tips on how to better fit in.  So far this tread is just becoming comical, which wasn't my intension.

Don't feel bad. I'm half-Mexican and I onky know enough spanish to get me in trouble. A majority of the people are cool as hell so you should be just fine. Have a shot of tequilla for me, man.

is it a normal boarder town or a "tourist" boarder town?
what is your nation of origin?

w/ a tourist boarder town you'll have alot easier time not knowing the language, but in a normal boarder town you'll pick up key phases much faster.

I wouldn't worry about poverty or crime or anything like that.  Mexico has very high development for a 3rd world country, and honestly 3rd world isn't as bad as people make it out to be.

Just be nice accept the culture and have fun.  If you act like an elitest "gringo" you're going to be treated like crap.
