*Topic*

And Yeah I was just wondering how many people (if any) like Progressive Rock.

My favourite would be (not in this order) Yes, Genesis, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Jethro Tull, Marillion, Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Pink Floyd and Opeth are some.

I'm thinking of starting a "Proggers of GameSpot" Union and was wondering if it was worth it.

Much appreciated, joelgargan.

I listen to Pink Floyd, the Moody Blues and Jethro Tull. I have no idea if anything else I listen to is "progressive rock" though.

First of all, pretty much everyone including RICK WAKEMAN from Yes call "their music style" Progressive rock.

You can not label music all you want, but honestly it just makes a mess of things. Genres help people find similiar bands and are a useful and accurate way to define and sort music.

Second of all, they were a few of the Prog Rock bands I like. Yes, "So called progresive rock" does have a lot of great bands and I "...named a few.", But the point of this post was to see how large if existant at all the Prog (Or ______ Music community if you'd prefer) was on gamespot.

You're more than entitled to your opinion, but please, make sure you know the context in which I used the terms which you found offensive/disagreeable.

It really wouldn't have been much use if the topic was called "MUSIC: Do many people on GameSpot like __________ ____?", now would It?

labeling music gives you a good idea of what the band is.. could you imagine going into a record store , or if the itunes store or amazon didnt tell you what genre a band was? how would we know what kind of band was what.. and if their was no youtube or last fm to listen to the songs.. when i hear " technical death metal" i know what im getn into , if i hear progressive rock, i know, flamenco guitar.. .. the more specific the better..

It's probably my favourite genre of music. You don't find many bands around like King Crimson, Yes, (early) Genesis, Porcupine tree, Dream Theater Or Tool.

I think it's becoming more popular again with bands like Dream Theater being relatively popular.

Even though Tool is mainstream because of their popularity, they are still considered Prog Rock and one of my fav bands. I love Mars Volta, Dream Theater, Yes, RUSH, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, ect.

But really, let's try to define Prog Rock: Art rock? Music that breaks away from the traditional guitar/bass/drums, 3-5 mins, verse-chorus-verse formula? You could probably include A LOT of great bands into that genre because good bands take chances, they break free from tradition, they explore ...

I can't give you a definition, but some key elements include...

  • Higher levels of technicalproficiency
  • Better composition
  • Emphasis on all parts of the band (IE. Being able to hear bass, guitar, keyboards and drums during a chorus)
  • Breaking the general structure of rock (not always, but Prog rock more than often won't follow the general song formula of Verse-Chorus-Verse-Chorus-Bridge-Chorus-Chorus
  • (Not always) but generallyaccompaniedby High, Clean male vocals (Examples... Derek "Fish" Dick, Steve Hogarth, Peter Gabriel, Jon Anderson, James LaBrie, Chris Squire)

Those are some general Conventions (if you will) of Progressive Rock (Or "Prog"). A good place to learn about Prog is

Progressive rock is one of the best kinds of rock, there are so many great bands and talented musicians that have come from that genre. The late 60s, and most of the 70s had the best prog rock around. The 80s killed alot of prog bands like Genesis, and YES, but some like King Crimson stayed good. Can is another really great prog band. The 90s and our decade seem to have brought prog rock back, there are some amazing prog rock bands around these days like Frost, Anekdoten, Spock's Beard, The flower kings, The Tangent, Porcupine tree, Echolyn, Pain of salvation, Riverside, the reasoning, Phideaux, The Dear Hunter, Pendragon, and Anathema.

I wouldn't say the 80's killed Yes, but...

They weren't the same.

The 80's were kind to Marillion.

Marillion had a good run in the 80s and 90s, but their music this decade has been hit and miss. Somewhere else was a pretty dull album, but their album last year "Happiness is the road" was fantastic. One of the best albums of 2008 by far.

Well just quickly, the major players in Prog Metal are Dream Theater, Opeth and Queensryche. Dream Theater are fairly cheesy, I'm sorta over them now, Opeth is good bu goes a bit death metal for me sometimes. I haven't listened to much queensryche though. If you want some good Progressive Metal, Try Dream Theater's Falling into Infinty, Or Opeth's Watershed.

Porcupine Tree's Fear Of A Blank Planet is also quite Metally.
