I bought an electric guitar last month, and I have not really had regular lessons. I have a book to teach myself, but it is the most boring thing ever, and when i do it I don't feel like I'm learning at all. So I just find music online to play, and I am mainly playing muse songs. Has anyone got any ideas on what I should do to progress, and what music is easy but interesting to play (There are a couple of songs where its the same two notes again and again and again - so boring!)

Well, the first thing you should do as an aspiring guitarist is to learn the basic chords... here is a link to all the major ones, and it even lets you listen to them to make sure you got it right. http://www.8notes.com/guitar_chord_chart/C.asp

Yeah, on my phone it has that sort of thing, with the proper fingering (sounds wrong!) too. I can't play B and F, though.

Also - my friend who has been playing for a while tuned it for me, and he said he had to tune it two scales too low, because the strings are too tight - the lowest buzz a lot too- is this normal? When I take my finger off the fret, it makes a buzzing noise - is this a problem with the way I do it?

I don't think the buzzing would be entirely your fault. IF you friend knows how to check/adjust the action (how high the strings are above the fretboard) then get him to do so.

Yeah, I looked at Smoke on the Water and managed to play the intro, but I'll have to do it more seriously - I often only play the intro and then get bored.

Had that too, I replaced my strings with different ones and the problem dissapeared. I'd suggest either that or go see the person who sold you it and ask for help.

I learned lots of Tool, Metallica and RATM when I started out.

All fairly basic stuff.

I'd also go to youtube and search for "satriani lesson" :P http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWHKeC4IEgA

that depends on him though. For me when I started, chords and stuff like that actually pushed me away from wanting to learn. So I just didn't learn them. After time went on i got better and chords aren't a problem anymore. I still don't like playing them much at all though. That is why I taught my self most of the stuff so I could play the way I wanted to play. People kept telling me to start on the acoustic too and I didn't. It really all depends on you topic creator. Just let go and have fun.
