My brother annoys the crap out of me by saying things he doesn't know but he pretends to know. I want to call him out on this but he easily to take offense. If he's just an acquaintance, or a stranger I wouldn't care but he's my brother.

Gosh that sounds a lot like OT.
Bend him over your knee and spank him like the bad little boy he is.
Oh my. Do use the leather glove.
Bare handed.
He should start posting here on OT. He would fit in perfectly with a lot of users and and we can always use an increase in numbers since the site redesign.
We have a winner.

I have a friend like that. Calling out doesnt help in some cases - this dude has some issues and your bud may as well.

So much truth in this post.
If you never call him out, he'll never learn that he doesn't know everything.
so what if he gets offended? If he's so easily offended, he needs to grow thicker skin anyways.
It's your duty as a brother to put him in his place.

Leather whip.
You should read (and it's a very short read) the Harry G Frankfurt's philosophy of bullshit, which he titled "On Bullshit".
My brother was the same, he didnt know squat about current events, politics, religions, general science, economics, computer stuff etc.
I was pretty bad. So after years I got tired of it and when ever he came to tell me something (99% of the time I would have already known it and in detail), I would just listen to him as if it was my first time hearing it. I would let him finish and right there i would correct him and tell him the whole story in detail and explain to him how and why things happened that way or tell him the history of it. I would have to do that. Everytime he would say something it was clear he only read the headline to but doesnt know about about it, I would ask him after he was done talking, "do you know why? do you know why that is? do you know whay they are doing that?" and 99% of the time he wouldnt know the answer, and thats where i would inform him about it.
Instead of getting mad and telling him he doesnt know shit about nothing (which I would for years), I would just wait till he was done talking and fill in all the blanks and inform him. There is only one way to combat ignorance... its with knowledge.
I love my brother but sometimes I would like to punch him on the mouth so he can choke over with his own teeth and blood. He can be "loud" and indiscreet in public, talking shit and inappropriate things.
