I know I know, weight is one of those things that you dont bring up to people. And I didn't give a damn when I noticed that he was gaining a few lbs, but it's gotten a little ridiculous. My buddy used to be really in shape but over the summer he kinda stopped working out and gained a few lbs. No big deal. But over the course of this semester he has probably packed on 40 lbs of lard. He never works out anymore and is eating almost constantly... well more like stuffing his face. One of our out of town friends came in recently and asked me later what the heck happened to him. And he's right... a person doesn't go from really slim and in shape to almost obese in under a year... should I ask if something is going on? or is this too personal? It's awkward but at this rate he must have accidentally caused santa claus to slip and fall off his roof or something.

Have a sleepover at his house and bring this up during the "bro-talk" section of the sleepover where you're both just laying there next to each other in your sleeping bags in the dark and talking.

Just tell him he's getting lazy and invite him to gym. Or challenge him to a race and rub your victory in, so his only choice is either to breakdown and get worse or challenge accept and get better. If the former happens, just don't be friends any more.

Just ask him if somethings wrong, and tell him why you're concerned. He could just not care about his weight, but doesn't hurt to ask.

Why do people need help with these issues? Either tell him he's fat and you're concerned, or let him be.

I guess I'm just worried about coming across as offensive rather than concerned.

And it is his life and sometimes people don't care, but he was really in shape before. Like one of those freaks with 3% body fat. And no he's not 8 but he is probably at least 200 lbs by now...

Alright, my serious answer: Ask him to go workout with you. Either he'll say yes and all should be well, or he'll say no. It's okay if he says no though, because this lets you bring up your point. You can be like "Hey you used to work out a lot, how come you don't really seem like you like to work out anymore?" and boom he'll deliver an incredible sob story and you will emotionally repair him and transform him back to the way he was.

None of your business, stay out of it. Maybe he's depressed or something. The only thing you should really do is say "Hey ___ are you doing okay? Your PERSONALITY has changed a bit since summer".

Or if you just don't want to further hurt a person who may be dealing with a lot of mental torment at the moment. His parents could be divorcing, he could have lost a family member or pet, he could just be really depressed or have bad anxiety. TC doesn't know and neither do we, so it's best that until he does know, he steps lightly and doesn't add insult to injury by letting his friend know that he's let himself go and turned into a tubby little piggy. Some people cope with stress by eating, and people who do often don't realize how much weight they've put on.

As a friend it should be his business. lonewolf604

It's never anyone's business to go "Hey, I noticed you've gotten really fat".

A while ago he mentioned in passing how big he's gotten... hopefully he mentions it again so I don't have to be the one to bring it up.

I realize that being like 5'10 and weighing 200 lbs isn't huge, I think it's the rapid gains that are most concerning. It would be a shame to see him be one of those 350 lb people who has health issues.

Invite him to the gym with you, saying that you really want to try and get in better shape and wanted to see if he was interested in joining you. If the weight gain topic comes up, or you trigger it, then ask about it.

Pretty much spot on. I was a little more blunt though, in regards to talking to my mother about her weight issue because she's my mother, and we can walk about anything. I do want my niece to lose weight, because she's 5,2 and while I won't say her weight, she's heavier then me and I'm 6ft.

Telling a guy his personality changed is much worse than telling him he's getting fat.

Perfect. You can also use this to conveniently bring up the issue of his weight - like maybe asking him why he got so big when he was in such good shape before. He shouldn't mind the question if you guys are mates, really.

It's never anyone's business to go "Hey, I noticed you've gotten really fat".

If the OP is the guys friend it's better he tells him no before the weight truly becomes an issue. It's one thing to be self-destructive when you're depressed but his buddy needs a reality check. Maybe he should offer to exercise with him, start going on walks with him a couple times a week, they could also talk about what ever issues his friend is having. His friend may not wanna talk but that doesn't matter he needs to pick himself up and stop damaging his health. When I've been depressed and have done self-destructive things sometimes it took an outside opinion.

I'd let it lay unless he brings it up. As someone said he may be eating for comfort. Has something traumatic happened to him lately?

Last time, on Sex in the City:

Just ask him if somethings wrong, and tell him why you're concerned. He could just not care about his weight, but doesn't hurt to ask.

lensflare15

When my old roommate was putting on the sophomore 30, this is how I approached it:

"You're kind of turning into a fatass".

"Yeah, I kind of am, aren't I"?

"Yeah, you kind of are".

"We drinkin' tonight"?

"You betcha".

"Cool".

Tell him to lose weight. If he doesn't, call him fat and unsexy. It'll make him feel bad about himself and he'll go on a diet...maybe.
