I noticed my dog's left eye was cloudy and the vet says she has cateracts. Now she is afraid to walk. Up until a week ago, she loved to jump onto the couch so she could look out the window. Now she's too scared and just cries so we can help her up.

Apparently it is common for dogs, so has anyone on OT had a dog with cateracts?

I'm currently saving up for her surgery, which is $2000-3000. But I'm wondering if it is worth it? From what I read, dogs eventually get used to being blind in one eye and it will be as if nothing is wrong. Can anyone verify this?

That really sucks. :( Never had much wrong with our dog, thankfully. I cannot confirm that they adapt to being blind in one eye, but I assume that eventually they might.

:( that really sucks. What kind of dog is it? My gf's golden retreiver is blind in his right eye after doctors removed a tumor. I noticed it when he wouldnt blink when i put my hand near it, but did blink when i did that to the other one. Sad to see animals, especially dogs, in pain or discomfort.

My dog has cataracts in both eyes... but she's also 16... lots of growths on her body, too. The vet said surgery isn't worth it since the anesthesia is too big of a risk... considering how old she is.

My cat had them in both eyes. It's generally not that big of a deal.

My Grandma's dog was blind in one eye. Dog's can get around being blind in both eyes in familiar areas i've heard, since they use their sense of smell to get around.

However sometimes what looks like a cataract is actually a change in the eye due to age, which might not affect vision and often times even vets can't tell the difference (though veterinary ophthamologists- essentially vets who specialize in the eyes- can).

Being scared makes me wonder though what it is. I think you should talk to the vet more and get as much info as possible. Tell the vet how the dog is scared and won't walk.

My dog has stage 3 cataracts in both eyes and she still does fine amazingly enough. I wouldn't really worry about it. Also, I would say the surgery probably isn't worth it depending on your dog's age.

My dog is 4, turning 5 in June. Stage 3? Does that mean your dog is completely blind? The vet says we need to wait until her cateract is fully mature before she can get surgery.

SuprmanLuvHandl

Well maybe it would be worth it. Is it a big dog?

And Stage 3 is the highest level I'm pretty sure. I thought it would make it impossible for her to see but she doesn't seem to have any trouble seeing things at all.

Yeah my dog had cateracts in both eyes. It wasn't too terrible for him though. He was old though and died soon after.

Personally I wouldn't spend the money.

Very cute dog!! Our German Shepard has cataracts in both eyes, but she still lives on like any other normal dog. She actually sees surprisingly well regardless of the fact that they were there since she was a little puppy (never had her go through surgery, felt it was too risky at that time).

Depending on the kids ages its kinder and much easier way than spending 3000 bucks on a lost cause, especially if the dog is old. Much easier to replace it and not tell anyone.

I think it depends on the type of dog. My beagle had some..horrible unknown condition strike her eye. It immediately blinded her and put her in crippling pain, and they had to take the whole eye out. Then a week later, the unknown horrible attacked the other eye, and that one had to be taken out. She did adjust. At first she was falling all over the place, being careful, unsure of herself, then she got used to having 1 eye and was almost normal when the other one got messed up.

Then she really stopped moving and we had to be careful around her. A week or two later, she was almost normal. Today (maybe 3 weeks later), she acts like a normal dog. She just bumps her head a lot and is extremely cautious around stairs. She knows where everything is and go outside and out the doggy door by herself. If you have food, she'll pinpoint the smell, sit in front of you, and look straight at you and attempt to look cute (and it works even though she has no eyes)

Just thought I'd share a happy story to give you hope there. She's 16 years old as well and healed fast and well.

I believe he said the dog is five in a later post, and his dog is small so 5 is young for a small dog. But blindness really isn't something worth euthanizing a dog over.

I suppose dogs, like people, might get used to seeing out of one eye. But on a seperate note, can you work out a payment plan with the Vet?

You cannot just "replace" a dog. Although you can get another, it will never take the place of your pet.

Your dog needs to suck it up. If it was both eyes, then that's worse. But one eye? Just one

If someone you love had a cateract, woudl you want them just to "suck it up" when its farily easy to treat? I don't think you would. Same principle applies here.

Why are you furious with me? It is the same principle. A pet is a memeber of the family. A cateract is easily treatable.

Cheaper for humans. Animals don't get the same medical sympathy. And they have a life expectancy of less than a quarter of a human.

But is the dog the exact same? No. Does it replace the other dog(s) in terms of mannerisims, shape, hair colour, memories? no. That's what I'm driving at. You may be able to get another pet, but it will never be the previous one.

Both of my dogs are completely blind and they're perfectly happy, I don't think it's worth it to put them through the stress of surgery, especially if it's only one eye. Both of my dogs get around extremely well for being blind, one you can hardly tell he can't see.
