Sorry to hear that. But hey, 13 years is still good going. When my dog died I managed to accept it almost straight away, I guess it was kind of inevitable given how she'd been sick for such a long time. Dogs are great pets but these things always have to happen sooner or later, so best to enjoy your time together and look back with fondness once they're gone :)

Sorry to hear that. Yeah it'll be 3 years since my dog died next week. It's hard at first, especially considering what I saw before we had to put him down, but you'll soon find out it's better to look back at the good memories. Besides, I'm sure the dog will always be in your heart and thoughts, so it won't be like he's gone. I remember just sitting around with my brothers and sister talking about my dog for hours after, it really helped.

My childhood dog had cancer in his knee. We could have amputated his leg, but it wouldn't have been fair to leave him like that, so we had him put down. It sucked, but with time everything got better. Eventually I got another dog, but he'll never compare to the first Puck, even though he's just as much fun.

I had a shi'tzu that lived for about 18 years. She was blind and deaf at the end, but she still got around.

he was a saluki/german shepard mix. great great dog. we got him as a stray when we lived in the middle east. he was left out in the middle of the desert. so we picked him up. had him ever sense. never once caged him either (except to go on an airplane)

That's a very pessimistic attitude. They bring eventual sadness because humans become very attached to their pets and love them, so its obviously very emotional if a pet passes away. Think about all the happiness and joy a pet would give you in the 10+ years before its death, every human and animal has to die someday, and of course that brings sadness, but it doesn't mean you deny yourself the chance to be happy in the meantime.

I used to really care about pets, then I understood that anyone getting a pet is just buying a ticket to heartache a few years later.

Then as I grew up I understood that all this sentimentality towards animals are useless, they're not people. They don't have feelings and thoughts, they're just items you buy that you need to take care of. They do nothing but add more work to your life and in return they die on you.

To get over it remember that it's not a person, that it doesn't have thoughts, ideas, or feelings and that in the scope of things it's no different then breaking a lamp or accidentally ripping a pair of jeans and you'll be ok

Yeah, no point in having family, friends, or any other living organism as a companion because one day they might die and bring sadness. Hell, one day you might be sad because you get fired from your job, so you might as well start taking those anti-depressents or just end it all.

that is possibly the biggest crock of crap ive ever heard. yes animals have feelings where the hell did you get the idea that they dont? they do think. they bring an imense ammount of joy to my life. and its been shown repeatedly that owning a dog or other pet can reduce stress levels. a lamp doesnt protect my. my pants will not play with me.

sorry to hear that :( its really sad when a pet dies :/

we had to put down our dog the day after thanksgiving. I'd love to "run into" the people who raised her and treated her poorly (we adopted her from these rednecks who used her as a breeding dog and did a crap job at keeping her healthy).

Continue and go on with your life. I passed a lot of time of my childhood in my grandma house and she had so many dogs and now none of them live. Recently the last one died because she was sick. Well, it is sad but you can't do anything, it is normal for living beings to live and die. Continue with your life and if you can find another pet; dogs are great. And sorry for your loss.

I dont get it either. Like she was kept in a kennel from the time when she was a puppy, and she was only brought out for breeding purposes. so her back legs never fully developed, meaning we had to carry her everywhere. Also she had no teeth because they never bothered to ever have her teeth cleaned. it was awefull

The job you're talking about gives you money, what does a pet give you?

Nothing

Oh it's something you can pay to house and clean and feed and in return you get nothing. It's nothing but work and then if you get attached to it like you would your favorite t shirt when it goes away you'll be sad.

They're animals, not people. They don't have thoughts or are able to feel. They're an expenditure of time and effort with no return.

When's the last time you saw an animal tell you why they're happy, or here's one better. When's the last time a sick animal explained how it was feeling? Never, just like a lamp or a TV set. The difference is that you only need to buy a lamp a bulb and you're done, a pet is just a daily grind of work for something that doesn't even understand what you're doing.

What do you get from anything or anyone? The answer is nothing. Everything you get comes from within. Objectively, your favourite t shirt is just a piece of cloth. The fact that it is your favourite is entirely of your own feeling. The same is true of everything. For example, if your wife loves you greatly, but you don't feel the same then you don't get anything from the relationship.

If you don't get anything from pets, then it is good you don't have any as you don't deserve them.

[QUOTE="Diophage"]Yeah, no point in having family, friends, or any other living organism as a companion because one day they might die and bring sadness. Hell, one day you might be sad because you get fired from your job, so you might as well start taking those anti-depressents or just end it all.

Depends what you get from them.

No, not at all

You get lots of things from various things in your life. Your job gets you money, clothes give you protection against the elements.

That whole "everything comes from within" doesn't work in the real world.

If your wife loves you greatly you probably get meals cooked for you and presents and someone to take care of you when you're sick, etc..... It doesn't matter if you don't love her, you're still getting things.

A pet is work with nothing in return, it has no thoughts or emotions and is simply a daily chore that some decide to take up.

That's why people shouldn't feel overly bad when a pet dies. Sure it's never good when any living thing dies when it's not to feed another but there's no difference between a dog or a head of lettuce, they were both living, had no ability to think while they were alive, and then died. Mourning an animal is like mourning a head of lettuce, neither one is on the same level of humans with the ability to think and understand.

That's the best advice you can have when an animal dies
