To make a long story short, my friend has been suffering from depression for almost two years now, and for the past six months we haven't been as close. I can't stand IMing her anymore because I hate being her emo sponge, I feel like I'm the only person she turns to. I used to get really worried and care about her but now I feel like she's doing it just to whine. It gets beyond emotionally exhausting for me, and she knows this and now she's mad at me because I don't IM her much.

I was thinking about taking a break from her... Because really, I can't stand her lately. >_> Good idea? Or bad?

EDIT: Alright, fixed it from emo to depressed for all you politically correct people. Emo wasn't a jab at her, she's even said "I'm so emo" before but apparently it wasn't taken the right way with you guys.

Hmmmm... talk to her and tell her how you feel. She won't like it, but it's going to be better if you just go off on a vacation away from her.

"my friend has been suffering from depression for almost two years now" If a pyschiatrist diagnosed that, she's not emo, she has an actual problem and you're just being an insensitive a hole.

It's a phase, if you've committed to being her friend, then you're committed to helping her through things like this. If you're turning away from her when she's reaching for help then that's not friendship. These people aren't just "being emo" or "trying to get attention", they need help, and friends is where it comes from, not so much parents, not the internet. Help her out if you're really her friend.

Like so much else, it depends on the person. Usually it doesn't, since you don't know them so it's difficult to trust them.

Probably just an attention whore. I rarely ever speak about my depression to others, however, I did at a point, but that was about a year ago, for only a little while. So no, I don't talk about it. Well, I don't mean the disorder, just the depressed part, not sure if it's a case of a disorder or not. Probably not, since I'm actually teh fails at life, so I have reason to feel like this.

Way to see if she has depression or not: If she complains about her parents, she doesn't. Seriously, that's the teeny bopper attention whore scapegoat. If she DOESN'T only complain about them, she has it, and she needs help.

100% serious suggestion: Take her to the top of a mountain, hike to a cliff. Take her hand and yank her off along with you. Make sure theres a safety net or bungee cord or something. Maybe this totally random experience will shock her out of her current state of mind. Side effects may include :Death upon impact, loss of limbs, truama, lifelong fear of heights, phobia of mountaintops I was kinda the same way for a lil while and I acted like a total A**hole to all my friends until they stopped caring. Then had a totally random kid who i have spoken probably 4 words to until he cheered me up and told me how much people did care . After that I had improved self esteem, a new bestfriend, and some chick-fil-a in the fridge =P

That's actually a good idea. XD I mean like. She says she wants to die pretty much every day but I think an incident occurring that would make her come close to death but live would make her realize just how lucky she is.

Completely isolate her. I wouldn't say I was thouroughly depressed, but last year I was an angsty mess. After a while of people giving a damn, they just sort of gave up and I realised It was pointless , and the things I were most unhappy with weren't going to change regrdless of my attitude. Also take her to see Enter Shikari live, they're awesome and can cheer anyone up, and playing with glow sticks whilst intoxicated is very fun.

You're a psychologist, who doesn't charge for the hours... Man, it must be hard, I used to like cheering people up, how hard it seems. But after a while, the motivation just goes away. So I say, if you don't like it, don't do it. Two years is a lot you know...

Or bad?

Aquat1cF1sh

Does she actually have a reason to be depressed or is she just depressed because "life sucks and nobody cares"?

If it's the latter, then tell her to grow the hell up, but I might treat it a little differently if she actually has a decent reason. But still, two years is two YEARS. She needs to get over herself. Screw the whole "depression is an illness" thing. People were depressed long before today, and guess what? They got over it, without the help of professional doctors and medication.
