For two probable reasons: 1. Most barf ends up in the toilet, where the smell loses a large portion of it's potency. 2. All barf includes one similar ingredient: Stomach acid. That said, I'd imagine not everyone's stomach acid smells the same, and I will bet you that what you ate will alter the smell of what you chuck back up.
