We were sitting together at a coffee shop doing homework. I began to take a sip of tea right as she adjusted her position in her seat, and she bumped my elbow hard enough to cause me to slosh a third of a mug of tea directly onto the keyboard of my Macbook. I turned it upisde down immediately and blotted up as much as I could, and it's been drying out for a while. But from what I can tell, it's completely fried. It kept rebooting itself constantly (I didn't think to take the battery out; dumb of me). Now it won't power on whatsoever. I think it may have short circuted. I don't know much about computers. I know that it's pretty seriously damaged, though. How would you handle this situation? She feels really bad, but there's no way she could buy me a new one. I wouldn't even want her to. It was just a clumsy accident that could happen to anyone. But now I'm out one Macbook, something that was expensive and that I relied on. Ideas?

Sue her. Or sue the company who makes the uncomfortable chairs that made her switch position. Or sue the coffee shop. Wait coffee shop, I thought you were drinking tea! Head explodes1

Only good thing about Apple, great customer service. If you got a warrenty on the thing, go into your local apple store and get that thing replaced. I heard they replace it on-the-spot. It's just an electronic, nothing to get upset about. Unless it was a TV, then that ***** should pay! :P

I call erroneous on all accounts. How are you on the computer now if your computer is broken? HMM?

Also, seeing as computers' main functions are to provide people with copious amounts of pornography, if you have a girlfriend you don't need a computer, so there's that.

Liquid damage voids the warranty. There are very few good things about Apple, and unfortunately customer service is not one of them.

I'm using my PS3's web browser with a keyboard. It's very slow. (And the "quick reply" option doesn't work here. Which is annoying.) Though owning a PS3 does not help my case that I do indeed have a girlfriend, the fact that I'm posting this here instead of on a Mac forum is because I want advice on how to handle the fact that she kind of caused this. Take my interest in how to handle that situation as your proof if you'd like.

You didn't buy the accidental warrenty? Probably costed too much. You could always try writing to Steve Jobs himself about it. Sending nude photos might help convince him to give you a replacement.

Well, if you don't want her to pay for it then you're just going to have to buy a new one. Call Apple and see what they can do for you; if nothing, then buy a laptop with a warranty that covers things likes that next time.

Yeah, I know. That's what I wrote in my post. You're agreeing with me. Anyway, the laptop was a (VERY generous and rare) gift from my dad, and I'll feel awful telling him what happened to it. I know he didn't get the accidental warranty. I should have, though. I've always been extremely careful with it. But accidents can be unavoidable, I guess.

You should get a windows laptop. Mac's are prone to accidents happening to them for a reason.

Open it up and wipe it down or take it to a repair shop I guess. Sucks but there's really not much you can do about it. Since it was an accident on her part you can't really ask her to pay for it. I mean you could if it was someone else but not your girlfriend.

Perhaps you and your girlfreind can go splits on having a profeesional look into the Laptop or Mac thing or wat ever. Mention your going to get it looked into and see if she offers to help pay for it, Accident or not perhaps she should think before moving in the future lol.

I'm very sorry to hear about your incident. This is exactly why I hate Apple. If it were a standard laptop with Windows OS I'd only have to worry about whether or not the HDD's ok and repair the fried motherboard at a PC repair shop for cheap.

Well for starters I wouldn't be drinking anything around a laptop in general as a spill will fry the entire machine while with a stationary you might just fry the keyboard. Even less so would I be sitting in a coffee shop doing homework with people carrying cups with liquids all around me.

That sucks, but I think I've got a rememdy.

Put an ad up on Ebay: "Limited offer, Macbook with a free coffee thrown in gratis!" Then mail the Macbook with a hlaf empty coffee cup in the parcel. When the latte soaked item arrives, you can blame the carrier. Job's a good un.

That's why you never drink fluids over a computer. I had a close call once, now I won't ever be bringing liquids near my computer again. Learn from your mistake (and yes, this was your mistake). There is nothing you can do now short of just getting a new one.

Here is the deal with Apple and their Liquid Damage clause, they put a micofilm on the motherboards that will react to any liquid and will slowly eat the film away. Since you turned it upside down and let it dry out chances are the film should still be intact.

I've skimmed Apple before when my users have split all kinds of things on their Macbooks and if the film doesn't break send it back to Apple or find a local shop that is an Authorize Applecare provider and take it to them saying you started the machine it kerneled panic and now it won't boot anymore and you think the logicboard is dead.

Also you might want to open the thing up and let it dry out so it doesn't smell like tea or have someone who is computer inclined to do it as well so they don't automatically decline it because they will if they smell coffee or tea.

She didn't mean to do it, so don't be hard on her.

Girlfriends do lots of things.

Like poke you in the eye, or bump the xbox while you're playing ninja gaiden causing it to put a ring scratch in the disk. You just gotta forgive her.

And it's half your fault for drinking around your computer anyways. As for getting a new one, save your money. Maybe like some others have said, she could pay for half.

Basically the same thing happened a few years ago, except it was with me and my brother. I bumped a glass of water that he'd set down next to his macbook and it fried the thing. I ended up paying for it, which I guess was fair :? Ironically, I had to sell my stock in apple to muster up enough cash.

Same exact thing happened to me, except it was an energy drink. I think it was Monster or some other kind of liquidized sugar. I had to take it to a computer repair place and they fixed it up for 150 bucks. Didn't make my gf pay, but I let her know I was super pissed about it lol.

I don't want to give you false hope, but my brother thought he'd killed his mobile phone when he dropped it into a pint of beer. It was only after a week sat on the radiator that functionality even started to return. My own mobile was rescued from a toilet last week and was back to nearly normal after an hour with a hairdryer pointed directly into its guts. For an item the size and complexity of a laptop, I'd expect a much longer drying time than a few days on a radiator.

Rice is good for drying electronics out. Buy a large bag and a foil turkey pan. Close the laptop up, and cover the laptop in rice in the pan. Wait a few days or so. Unfortunately, you're attempts to boot the system while still moist is a big no-no. Although the temptation is high to see if it still works, I always dry out the electronics before attempting to to turn it back on. But, hey, if it were me I'd give the rice a try. After all, it's only $10 if it doesn't.
