Hey guys, I'm in a predicament.

im 22 years old and i work for a company that shall remain nameless. even so i thought i should share with you the pros and cons and whether its worth looking for something else.

right the basic principle is that my company monitors the internet connections of different sites around the world. if they go down i just click on their icon and if they start working then job done, if not then i have to contact the site and get an engineer to go down and fix it manually (this happens about 3 times per shift). i work 8 hour shifts mon to fri between the hours of 7am and 12am and get paid £22,500 ($45,000).

right, to the pros. our ceo accepts that on some occasions no site will go down which means we are free to do the following.

facebook, msn messenger, youtube, gamespot etc, bring in a dvd, ps3 or xbox 360 (on late shift) and play guitar (i brought mine in tonight and jammed with a colleague)

i understand that this job might sound great, but im not really doing anything constructive and im not learning anything and it wasnt my prospective career...so would you consider me to be wasting my time in this job or not?

im expecting stupid answers but please give me an honest opinion,

cheers fellas!

Tbh I think that sounds great - and I think you're on great pay as well. However if you're feeling unsatisfied then do a job hunt on the side and see what comes up :)

If you really want to do something more with your life, then look out for new and different opportunities. Just don't quit your job on a whim.

I would love to have your job, but if you feel like you're not doing anything constructive then you should find a new hobby while you're at work. I think learning a new instrument is doing something constructive while filling your boredom

I know what you're about man. I work in an ISP call centre.

5 hr shift, containing 4 1.5 minute phone calls.

Look, everyone goes through stages in their life, at some point you just need money, after that, you start looking for job satisfaction. My philosophy has always been, "If you don't like what you're doing, do something else."

There is absolutely no reason why you shouldn't be doing something you love.

Are you enjoying your job? does it pay well enough for you to live off of? are you getting the benefits you need (holidays, medical/dental)? if you just dont feel like youre doing something constructive, but you ARE getting all that, take up a hobby to help people in the community.

your job sounds great!

if, for some reason, i wasn't able to do what I'm doing now, I'd totally try to get that job!

monitor websites, surf websites and if i want, PLAY VIDEO GAMES, all while making nearly $50,000 per year!?

everyone who has a job that isn't this one should be issued a sign that says "Yer doin' it wrong."

Including me.

I think if you feel your aren't accomplishing something, and feel unsatisfied. Then yea, start looking around for something new. Just look on the side of course, you don't want to just bail out and hope for the best.

im not being ungrateful for it by any means, but i used to be a cop (for a year) and im getting that itch of wanting to go out and do something constructive...i also have parents who earn less and work harder than me so i do feel an incredible amount of guilt...its also not like im coming onto OT bragging about it either.

i think you're right i should look for something else (back to the police? which pays the same)

i dont want to sound like im whinging at all though it could be misconstrued as that...i just sat here thinking "what on earth am i doing watching iron man and playing midnight club and getting paid?!?"

Like someone mentioned before - don't quit on a whim. Research other jobs you might like when you're at home. You should be happy with your career - it's the only thing that makes it bearable in the end.

why did you leave the Police force? would you want to stay on this time, or do you think you'd leave again?

job satisfaction is so important. if you're gonna do something for most of your life, you should be able to get some satisfaction out of it. and while the pay you have now is nice, it's not everything.

follow your heart.

and... if you leave the job you have now, can you be a reference on my resume? I have no previous experience in the field, but I am incredibly skilled at surfing the internet.

Well, you could start looking for a new career. You could also take classes at night and on weekends and maybe work for a higher degree. There's always an option, don't spend your life doing something you hate.

i was a PCSO (like an auxilliary cop but paid) with no weapons, power of arrest but we have a stab vest. basically my degree was policing with forensics and i want to specialise in hostage negotiation but the police promised a lot while i was in university then never delivered. you also get treated like crap from the public...but i miss it. its like the only thing i think i can do effectively...btw if you want my job id happily give you full support...youll need to live near oxford though hehe

Your job sounds like it'd be fun for like a week, and then just get kind of boring. Truly, if you feel like you are getting bored while at work, then I'd suggest that you look for a new job. While people do have to work for money, it is also important to take personal pleasure in your job especially that is what you will spend at least the next 20 to 30 years doing. Personally, I'd say look for new work if you feel like your talents are being underutilized. If this is the most strenuous work you can perform, then stick with it.

The feeling of not doing anything constructive can be quite bothersome by many people including myself. My brother was once in the same predicament. Close to a year ago he was able to convince his boss to be able to do his job at his home. He is now able to spend more time with his kids while still bringing home the bacon.

haha, you know, part of me would also love an easy job, but i'm actually with you on this one. fun for a while, and then pretty boring.

it would be a funny conversation to have with my parents, though... i'm moving to Europe to hang out and get paid for it.

so, if you went back to the police, do you think you'd keep with it this time?

i think that's the important question. no sense leaving a good job to go do something else that you don't like.

no whistle just the power of persuasion...most times i was handling drunks or junkies. so it was better to have a tetanus shot before anything else. we were also on a lot of raids which, when you are unarmed, can be a bit of a worrying prospect.

Don't worry, you have a stab vest they can't... oh, what? They stabbed you in a place other than the chest...

Anyway. Here's my advice. DO NOT quit this job. If you want to do something else start studying. Either buy textbooks and just learn while at work, OR enrole in a class of some sort and study at work. Also don't spend. Save. Save everything you get, that way, when you finally do leave you job for a better oppourtunity you'll have money to support yourself. But I wouldn't quit. I'd keep working up until you get a new job. Unless you're desperately unhappy in the environment quiting will only shift your sense of unproductivity from the workplace to the job-searching effort. As Xaos said it's not the best time for job hunting.

Well it's not a particularly lavish salary... but for doing what essentially amounts to nothing all day? Not bad...

In any case, though, I wouldn't quit if I were you... You've got a decent thing going, and if you hop out into the job market now, you're likely to be disappointed, and may not have the opportunity to rejoin this company.

So... just do research now. Look into prospective companies, or rethink what you want to do in life. Then wait for a better time to enact your plan.

is there a way to work up the corporate ladder there? if so try doing that. you will have more responsibilites and more pay. i heard somewhere that sights like amazon cant go down for even a day or they would go under so i think your job is pretty important.

try taking some classes on the side. youll have plenty of time to study while at work.

When looking back at your life do you want to see that you did that for 20-30 years? Perhaps you could find a better job that requires more work but is either more rewarding or pays better or both. But then again, if you are able to live comfortably under your current situation and have an enjoyable life outside work and are living a low stress life, then keep on working there.

I would look for a better job. Obviously this isnt what you really feel happy doing so you should be looking for something that will give you more fulfillment, although youll have to figure out what that is for yourself.

Dont worry about this too much, just be happy youve got someway of brining in money even if it isnt your favorite.

I understand what you mean about wanting to earn your money, but I don't know if I could leave that job if I was you. Is it stable in this economony? If so, I'd probably just hang on to it for that - you can always look to do something later in life and maybe when the economy gets better. For now I'd say enjoy it for at least a few more years.

I guess it's good for what you need as a 22 year old. But if you're looking to have a family in the future, you will probably need more income to support it.

I think that if you are doing okay financially and at least enjoy your job somewhat then it is not a waste but spend some of that money to enjoy your true passions
