kotaku has an interesting article on their webpage today about totoro

yes this giant fuzzy peaceful thing with the umbrella

14991166.jpg

and well its not a very well known fact that totoro is actually the name of an ancient diety of death.

with that piece of knowledge in hand rewatching it paints a horrid picture for you.

"The rumor says that Totoro is the God of Death, so the persons that can see Totoro are actually close to death, or already dead. What that means for the story is that when Mei goes missing and a sandal is found in the pond, Mei actually drowned. When Satsuki is asked about the sandal she cannot face the truth and lies about it not being Mei's sandal. So Satsuki goes on a desperate search for Totoro, calling for him and actually opens up the door the realm of the dead herself. With Totoro's help she finds her dead sister and they together go to their mother's hospital. There, the only one who actually noticed that the sisters were there, was the mother, who also soon is going to die."

while this is all specualtion and ghibli denies at eevry turn that one of their no.1 selling childrens films is actually incredibly adult and morbid under the surface the connections are fairly solidly drawn but not concrete.

until then your welcome to interprete it however u wish but if you take it this way totoro has single handidly taken the lives of a mother and her two children without raising a finger:shock:

I've never seen or heard of that anime, but given that theory the picture you posted

14991166.jpg

is rather disturbing. Look how happy they are at the prospect of death arriving.

I've never understood this penchant to keep children "safe" from death, or their media free from "adult" themes. They are going to grow up someday, and need to be taught about things. Watch Watership Down and tell me that would be considered an appropriate children's movie in today's market.

Uhh FYI http://ghiblicon.blogspot.ca/2007/06/totoro-is-not-god-of-death.html This is old. and denyed by the studio who created Totoro.
One of the great things about Totoro is that you have this large, ferocious-looking creature that is completely benign and happy. He's peaceful. He's the monster you invite from under your bed and have tea parties.Ghibli

Maybe that has some bearing to the story about the mother, but I don't think Miyazaki's intent was to give a subtext of death to the girls in the story.

Having seen Grave of the Fireflies, I know that Miyazaki is no stranger to death and unbearable strife in children and adults. I don't think Totoro was that story. He pretty much covered pain and suffering in Grave. If he wanted to tell another story like that, it would have been more open and less subtle about the whole idea.

Grave of the Fire flies was a Ghibli film, but not a Miyazaki film....

Incidently, Totoro and Grave were origionally released as a two parter, theater package.

yeah...I stopped reading kotaku as a website long ago.
1.they already dont post video game stuff when they are a video game blog that touts themselves as news.
2.the editors and staff are morons.

this just reaffirms that posting something that really has nothing to do with video games and is BS about one of my favorite childhood films by Ghibli.
f*** kotaku.
