Alright, I'm turning eighteen soon and I'm going to get a tattoo to celebrate and to become a part of the urban hipster subculture. Just kidding. I'm really getting one to express my love of a philosophy and a specific book. It's going to say "L'etranger" or "The Stranger". She isn't mad about that though. She's mad that I'm getting it up the underside of my forearm. "You'll never get a job" She's been screeching at me for the last two weeks. I don't want a job that won't let me have a tattoo, and I'm probably going into the arts so it won't matter too much.

Does anyone else think this is a bad idea? I'm getting it no matter what probably, I just want some outside opinions other than those of my friends.

You can get a job anywhere really, aslong as you wear a long sleeve T-Shirt. :D

Probably still a good idea to put it somewhere less obvious until after you have that arts job that you're going to stick with for the rest of your life.

That's what I told her, to which she replied "Sooooo you'll NEVER wear short sleeves at work??? You are SOOOO DUMB!!!" Yes, sometimes she speaks in all caps.

Get it where you want. Employers are becoming much more accepting of tattoos these days.

Tattoos in general are a bad idea. The fact that it's permanent is unnecessary and foolish.

Not if it's a philosophy on life or something that you feel strongly about. Although I do agree with tattoos being stupid if you get something stupid. My manager has a tattoo of elmo holding a beer bottle. She is very ashamed.

Indeed. It is a particularly good idea if you're 18. Nobody ever has regretted something they did when they were 18...

Just remember that it will be with you for the rest of your life. Getting a tattoo isn't something you take lightly.

When you get a tattoo do you think your going to still like the subject/appearance of it 10 years from now? How about 20 years from now? 40 years?

As long as you seriously consider the matter, and it isn't just a passing fancy, it should be fine. There are few people that will turn you down for a job just because you have a tattoo.

My advice is wait a little, and if it still appeals to you, then go ahead.

I sense some sarcasm. I hate to say it, but screw me in twenty years. I live in the present, which is kind of what the book that I'm getting the tattoo of is about. It's an absurdist point of view on life.

If I were you, I'd get it done in India Ink before actually getting it. The India Ink lasts about 2 weeks and it can give a good indication of how having a tattoo will be.

What's wrong with something temporary? If you like it, keep applying it wherever you like. I'm sure you'd tire of it eventually.

Definitely going to do that. Someone told me about that a while ago, I think it's called a henna tattoo or something along those lines.

Tattoos are only silly if they don't mean anything to you. If something is close to your heart or its something you feel strongly about than you shouldn't let your sister decide your life. I say go for it :D

In all honesty, I would reconsider where you're going to get the tattoo. I was once pursuing a degree/career in art, but a few years in I realized that it isn't a very practical career in terms of making enough money to live on my own/raise a family in the future. Unless you are planning on going into graphic design or some other degree/career that's similar, I would really rethink your options on where to get that tattoo.... and maybe even your career. I love art, but it just isn't practical, it's more of something I do on the side to make some extra cash. This is just my opinion, so of course you don't have to take my advice, but at least listen to my experience.

my cousin has a tattoo in that same spot. it's pretty cool because if you read it upright it says "Jesus" and if you read it upside down it says "Saves". but at work they just make her wear a long sleeve shirt. it just really sucks in the summer.

I'm still pretty young, but I would wait till finishing college to get a tatoo, if I were inclined to get one. And also, be sure it is stupendously badass because otherwise you will regret it for the rest of your life

I am personally for tattoos, I think they look really cool and its a way to express yourself but you do realize that just because you think strongly of something doesnt mean that you have to parade it. The thing is most people wont understand your tattoo, or even care enough to ask. Majority of the people will just see you as an out of control teen, which you probably are not just saying. Make sure you really want to live with it for the rest of your life. Also tattoos do stretch and fade so becareful.

yeah... no problems getting A job... but what about getting THE job... the one you WANT to get, not just any one you CAN get...

you will probably have difficulty getting ANY job at most major companies, and just about ANY professional job... you just won't be taken seriously...

believe me, I have hired 30 - 40 people in the last year - from department managers and degreed professionals, to security officers and housekeepers... guess where all the tattoo'd hires work...

yeah, it won't matter to you now when your 18, but a tattoo is FOREVER...

so now that I have shared my wisdom with you... enjoy your tattoo...

My Bethany tattoo has yet to restrict me from getting a job. I think it helps, actually.

See NearTheEnd's GS tattoo thread for further details.
