Santa Cruz is the first city to have mandatory water conservation. The state of California is considering following up like Santa Cruz did.

http://news.yahoo.com/californias-catastrophic-drought-just-got-worse-lot-worse-181115468.html

My question is.....do you live in California? What would you do if it became mandatory? Would you follow the law?

And if you don't live in California, well, what do you think about this crisis? The whole state is in a severe drought.

Always amazed me that 2/3 of the world is water, yet we still suffer droughts. You'd think they'd be working on a way to turn that ocean water into drinkable water.

Yea, turning salt water into drinkable water is possible but it's incredibly expensive. Since the world we live in is run pretty much entirely by money we won't be using salt water unless A) Money because a thing of the past or B) Desalination becomes commercially feasible.

I live in California, I read in the LA Times a while back that the drought has put pressure on solutions such as the development of water desalination plants. It's gonna cost money, and take time, but they're the best solution for California to lessen the impact of similar situations in the future.

I didn't know it was getting this bad. But if it really getting this bad out there, I'll be okay supporting it and doing my part.

it varies by city. my city has not gone through with the mandatory reduction yet, luckily. but i was reading sacramento uses a strike penalty. first offense for going over is $25 and it increases to as much as $1000.

The Southwest uses much more water than can be refilled. Lake Powell and Lake Mead will be dead in a few decades. Probably not wise having golf courses and grass lawns in an arid environment.

People **** away tons of resources. When they are given the option (recycling) they are generally too fucking lazy even to do that.

Forcing people to do shit can be a good thing, people are lazy assholes when life is good.

southern california destroyed owens lake and then almost destroyed mono lake and central valley farmland and for what?

so you could live in a desert?

you idiots won't be happy until you ruin one of the most fertile agricultural areas in the world for the production of shitty sitcoms and places for plastic surgeons to practice.

it's not worth it.

It's not the first time California had instituted mandatory water rationing. I recall something similar happening back in the late 80's.

Yeah, because it's just common knowledge that everyone knows the Earth is made of .02% water...when clearly two others in this thread even questioned it. Nice job, you're officially the smartest person in the thread. Your mother must be so proud.

It's inefficient and costly.

And drought's are caused by a lack of rain.

Or, ya know, just use what you need because we don't need a f*cking ocean to provide us with even a comfortable level of potable water. If we didn't have golf courses and front yards full of plants that were originally grown in a country where it rains literally half the year in the middle of a desert then water resources wouldn't be as scarce. If we had been more proactive about global warming starting fifty years ago like we should have been then some of these droughts wouldn't be as severe and local bodies of water would be recovering instead of staying at record lows. If wishes were fishes the world, quite literally, would be an ocean.
