I was watching this program on TV called Mysteries of the Bible. It was about the last book of the bible,Revelation, and what everyone thinks about it. Revelation mentions visions that John saw,and many say that these visions will come true in our day. Visions of the beast or the wild beast, wars in Israel, great destruction,Armageddon, and all kinds of others. Some are trying to figure out if Revelation is describing the real "doomsday" for mankind,or if it's just visions of history. Now I know we have some people here who don't believe in the bible, but you do know that some prophecies/visions did come true right? Were they just coincidences?

We'll find out how the world will end when we get there. No need to worry about it until the time comes, because no matter what we do or how much we try to guess/predict it will still be the end of the world

A lot of people think that it was just coded language used to describe what would happen in that specific time period.

Sounds like general destruction was predicted. And that's very difficult to forsee, it's clear nothing ever ends.

I will just go with what the Mayans say. 2012 here we come! We are going to be sucked into a black hole. By the way, nothing in the bible should be taken word for word; since it is all metaphors.

I don't think some fruitcake from the Bible can predict the end of the world. I'd be more likely to trust an intoxicated deer's insight in the end of the world personally

Anywhere that humans live has seen multiple instances of warfare in the time since Revelations was written; this is not a very compelling argument.

Yes.

How could that be? How can some mere man write this stuff down, and it comes true by coincidence?

OT's Theme for the night of 2/13: Impaired animals!

Seriously this is the 3rd drunken/retarted animal reference I've seen in the past hour.

Yes.

Either that or they're open to wide interpretation. After all, no one ever comes up with specific prohecies like "A guy named David Murphy will be born in the year 1977. He'll have blond hair, blue eyes, and a triangular birthmark on his left forearm. He will single handedly issue in one-thousand years of chaos by telling the dirtiest joke in the world at a very inappropriate time."

Now that's a prophesy. Not, "Nations will war sometime in the future in this general area."

It's called ambiguity.

"Oh my! In the future! A great conflagration! War and atrocities all throughout the world!"

I have predicted what will happen in the future.

Nobody knows who wrote the actual revelations except that whoever it was likely created and included Gnostic and Greek concepts into it. It's the equivalent of Christian mysticism and likely would have been made up, except we don't know for what purpose.

You can read it anyway you like, but it doesn't really have a known meaning that can be taken from it. It's like reading Kafka's Metamophasis two thousand years from now, not knowing who wrote it or why.

Coincidences is my best guess...although Friedrich Nietzsche and the Mayans predicted the great wars of the last century...

Yeah, and I think some reverend predicts a terrorist attack in the US this year. He thinks that God told him that.

The Bible is a joke and should be judged and critiqued as so.

There are so many things happening in the world. I could easily make a prediction of something that will happen in the next few millenias.

i've heard that they were not prophecies rather commentary on the author's current situation... written in a sort of code to avoid further persecutions by the roman empire...

Yeah,I have heard of something called "The Bible Code". It mentions many things that may happen in the future.

Yeah, that's exactly not what comp_atkins meant. He was referring to an allegorical description of events contemporary with the author of Revelations.
