Yeah, this story is awesome. The NAACP seems to be grasping to retain relevance.

What's sad is Hallmark won't even fight back. They know they're in the right, why not put the NAACP in it's place?

"it sounds like a group of kids laughing at blackness...again" I mean seriously. Do they not have better stuff to do? Though I guess one could look at this as a positive: If that is the worst racism occurring in LA (as to attract the attention of the NAACP), then we are doing pretty damn good as a nation.

It's just good business sense. Pulling a bunch of relatively worthless paper from the shelves (this won't even require a recall) will be FAR cheaper than fighting it.

Screams of cowardice, to me. I understand it'll be cheaper this way, but sometimes you need to put idiots in their place.

The management of a company would be frittering away the owners (shareholders) money on something that would do nothing but garner bad PR. I, for one, would be unhappy with a company who decided to do this if I owned substantial stock in them.

It's all about principle, for me. It doesn't take much money to write a simple press release saying:

"NAACP, please shove it where the sun doesn't shine and stay out of our business. It's clear you have lost all sense of reason, and we at Hallmark lament to see you fallen so far off the trail you originally set out upon. This has nothing to do with the fact that you represent black people, in fact, we happen to have three black executives on our board who think you are absoutely out of your minds.

Please go back to dealing with issues that are legitimately racist, like affirmative action.

Very respectfully,

Hallmark."

That's what I would have liked to have seen.

I'd be willing to bet it won't lose them any money. Honestly, can you really tell me you think the NAACP isn't insane and out of touch with reality?

Haillmark would be hailed as heroes and probably sell even more cards if they said everything I just touched on.

But it's not the overall NAACP that did this, rather a local branch. So it isn't exactly fair to dismiss the entire organization.

It would be a PR disaster. For one, hostile and sarcastic responses from corporations don't generally sit well with consumers anyway. Second, the pro-NAACP people would be call for blood. Third, the people who don't care about the NAACP but care about civil rights would be crying over you bad-mouthing affirmative action (I don't know if your comment about affirmative action was meant in a negative light or not, but it would be construed as such - and there are a lof of pro-affirmative action people out there).

The PR game is difficult even when you issue only polite comments and don't fight non-profit organizations. They don't want to start snidely fighting with civil rights groups.

The NAACP only loses points when they purport that a card company is spouting racism. Doesn't matter where the branch is located, or that it's only one branch. I see an organization that takes itself way too seriously and finds shadows where there aren't any. Just like it doesn't matter that the majority of tea party members aren't racists, they're still called it anyway.

So according to your line of thinking, just because some Tea Party members are racist, they should all be demeaned for being racist? Two wrongs don't make a right, you know.

See, I just don't care about PR, and it's about time corporations did the same thing, when they're in the right.

How can racism ever go away when we have organizations that claim it's still going on whenever they hear the word black? It's nuts. I say let's be equally nuts. Call them out for being the racists. Enough with the PC bull. I think we get enough of that whenever we hear Obama talk.

So I assume that you don't complain when Tea Party members are called racist? It shouldn't be about these "sides" (they are labels that divide and separate), it makes more sense to call out what's wrong in both instances.

Would pointing out the irony be patronizing? Seriously though, I'm sorry if it seems like that, it is not my intent.

Of course I complain, but I know people are going to think the movement is racist no matter what I say. I just think there are certain times when people are too politically correct. I don't think somebody, or some company, should just back down because some organization---which, let's face itt, likes to jump the gun a bit---thinks their card is being racist when it clearly isn't.

And I think you know I wasn't being too serious with my letter from Hallmark to the NAACP. If you didn't, rest assured, I would be a little more tactful if I had to write such a thing.

It would be nice, but do you see why they can't? The management is entrusted with the job of looking out for the shareholders. Sinking the shareholders' investment on a frivolous stunt like that would be a large betrayal of their trust.

my grandparents(rip) on both sides were more racist than anyone i will ever meet.but the older i get,the more i begin to understand them.it is sad but i suppose it may be natural for humans.xromad01
You are doing a bad job at growing then. It should have been more understandable to you when you were young, and as you get older you realized that EVERYONE sucks and that your grandparents were wrong (and sucked as well). In fact, here is something to think about. What if the conditions of a group of people you see today are the RESULT of the actions your GP's committed on said group? Maybe their racism wasn't the result, but the cause?
