The British MI5 has revealed that the Nazis had plotted to infiltrate the Vatican in order to spy on the Allies who were advancing through Italy. The plot called for the Nazis to set up a "Georgian Cloister" (i.e. a cloister for monks from the Soviet Republic of Georgia, the plot was hatched by a Georgian living in Rome who sympathized with the Nazis because of their shared dislike for Communism) under the protection and authority of the Vatican (because it was a neutral country) which they would then infiltrate with spies disguised as monks and seminarians and use to spy on the Allies.

The Plan was foiled by an Italian Policeman (Giuseppe Dosi) who was working as a British informant and tipped off British Intelligence. The Vatican also was suspicious of the plot when they discovered that the monks didn't know much about Catholic doctrine and were a little too friendly with the women. The British then informed the Vatican and the Vatican sent a diplomatic complaint to Germany.

The MI5 have also revealed that, in an unrelated plot, the Nazis tried to infiltrate the Boy Scouts.

This is not the first Nazi plot about the Vatican, in 2006 or 2007, a book came out describing a plot to kidnap the Pope, it has also surfaced that Pope Pius XII had told Cardinals that if he was arrested by the Nazis he would resign and that plans were made to elect his successor in Portugal (i.e. away from German forces so that they wouldn't interfere) if he did get arrested.

This is so cool! Nice info, man! Well yeah, if they were planning to conquer the world, they should have first taken out the Vatican ;)

Seems like they should've trained their monks a bit better.

They were indeed. Nazis go around dressed in black, telling people what to do, whereas priests... . I don't know an awful lot about the history of the church but this isn't the first article I've seen joining dots between the Catholic church and the Nazis.

The Catholic Church is not affiliated with Nazi Germany.

The monks didnt know much about the Catholic doctrines? It must have not been an important plot because that is a huge hole in the plan to infiltrate the Vatican.

I'm not saying it was. Just saying I've come across a lot of articles discussing Vatican authorities' reluctance to oppose Nazism in the past. Like I say, I'm crap in church history and all I can rely on is what I read. Like this.

Oh, Sorry. I thought you were saying the Church supported Nazi Germany and had ties with it. My fault :P

I think the idea is that it might not have failed. Which is why Pope John Paul II's apology for the past sins of the church was so important to so many people.

It did fail, because of an Italian Policeman caught on and alerted the Brits.

I think the "reluctance" to oppose Nazism was done out of fear of the Nazis retaliating by punishing Catholics in Germany and occupied countries, or even invading the Vatican itself (especially once they occupied Rome), the ratlines seem to have had a "humanitarian" goal, plus it seems like wikipedia is using most of it's info from one source (phayer).

Maybe you're right - like I say, I've no idea about the accuracy of this, or almost any historical sources really. I'm sure we could both dig up hundreds more such articles and their responses, but who wants to get locked into an effective conspiracy battle? The apology's the most important thing to me.

The current pope, Ratzinger, was in the Hitler Youth. Not that it matters though, because he was forced to do it and he obviously isn't affiliated with Nazis anymore. He actually hated Hitler Youth, but I'm just making a point.
