I'm turning goth soon, my mates getting me a load of stuff and so far I want to be cyber, industrial but I've only heard of three different types of goth. I'm not asking you explain allof them to me, I'm asking is being cyber industrial a good idea or should I just forget the entire goth thing or should I go for a different style??? I need an honest opinion here :) pleasethe_tomboyDude, make your own style. Don't conform just because you feel like you need a "style," it will only make you feel like an alien in your own skin. Then again maybe you should go for it. It will be one of life's lessons.

This is really funny...mostly because you're TRYING to be labeled. When you get older, you'll look back at this thread and laugh.
I dunno, goth seems like an anti-social style. From your posts you don't seem like that kind of person.wrlyyThats generalizing goths. Not all are antisocial. By that rational all "preps" are social when, infact, I know many preps who are antisocial and dress preppy because they feel it will ease them from the socially akward position they are in.

[QUOTE="Artosa"]Goth is a type of 1980's music-Karayan-Gothic is a sub culture adhering to creativity, independence and a love for dark art and literature (known as gothic art/ literature) as well as gothic architecture. that was developed from the music, its was basically music in the 1980's. and it was more like punk back then.

Not to mention the architecture that dates back as far as 1144. Music is a very small part of it, and in my opinion neglectable, it's not what its about.

*sigh* The literature was not regarded as goth back when it was written.  After the term goth became accepted it was then applied to anything dark and gloomy. It's just descriptive and isn't really a "style" of people. Those who call themselves goth now are wannabes. Goth died.

What does the name matter? Call it dark romanticist for all I care.So many people are saying "be yourself don't turn goth. Don't conform" lol. Does no one see the problem with those comments? What if being goth is something this person is just wanting to be and *shock* is part of this person being themselves. Maybe they just wanna try something new to.funkadelichikaHow is being yourself if you decide to "turn" goth? I have nothing against goths but IMO it shouldn't be something that you just turn into.

It's not who she is, it's what her friends want her to become, or so that's what I got out of it after reading it.

I agree...something like turning gay is who you are because you are born with it (even though you won't realise until your teens), but this isn't the case here.

I'm just myself and that's what I'll always be. Being yourself is being unique, not another "lifeless form" that is same as others.

The original and in my opinion true description of a "Goth" (besides the Ostro- and Visi-Goths) is not really a strict set of rules. Its enjoying art (which can be expressed in many ways), literature and music in many forms, which mostly adhere to those dark themes and take place in gothic locations. That doesn't mean you can't enjoy a comedy, but it's more of a deeper enjoyment out of that darker art, like how classical music is more profoundly enjoyable than other types of music. It's also creativity and independence which may cause them to disown the name Goth itself, but also a sense of enjoying individuals who are like minded. It's certainly not the teenager at highschool who happens to wear black clothes and reads magazines about witches and ghosts.
