PC.. Mac isn't even all that useful. It's just for bragging rights. Anyone with half a brain will be able to know how to avoid major viruses even on a PC. And you need half a brain to even know how to USE Mac.

they arent useful? thats when i stopped reading. For college definitely get a mac .you dont have to worry about your computer not working come time to write a paper.no worry about purchasing virus software, what does that cost now a days?60 dollars for a year?macs have better battery life, the OS is embedded into the computer so not only is it faster it is by far more stable.the time it takes to turn on your pc is ridiculous.Any one with half a brain will be able to avoid major viruses on a pc?ya.....right! A pc is detined to get a virus even if you pay 60 dollars a year for a good antivirus. I have the white macbook that goes for $949.99 and my friend got a dell xps.by the time we both turned ours on mine was booted up and i was surfing the web and checking the email while his was still loading up!! His cost him around $1200 dollars.I have neber had a pc last more then 2 years while my brother still has his macbook from college thats working like its right out of the box and it is 4 years old!how much is microsoft office?150?iwork is 60?in the long run even if you get a cheap pc for $500-600 dollars you will still save money from a mac.Does anybody know anybody that has had a pc last them through all of college?i sure dont.

I hope you're kidding. Avast free for virus. You're safe. You are not safe from viruses, you are acutally more vulnerable, there are just less of them for you. Your bloated OS is not faster. He can play games. He has a faster hard drive than you, who cares about boot times? Open office.

A pc is superior just make sure it is at least decent and not some trashy budget computer from Dell or anything of that sort. Trust me when I first got my computer which is a Dell Dimension 3000 I had to upgrade the video card and the RAM to 2 gigs just to get it running at a normal speed for everything that I do.

PC, I've always had PC's and preferred them, first time I used a Mac I was like "I don't like this" Then my PC broke and my brother gave me a Mac and I thought I'm not using this.

I've always prefered Mac's to PC's. PC's crash to oftencan get Viruses pretty damn easy and are just kinda slow. Mac's although they can't play as many games, (Which you shouldn't be playing anyway in College) they are faster, Near-Virus free, and very rarely crash. And if you have the extra cash, its almost worth it just because of how much prettier they look =|cryptosopoidium
its pretty humorous to hear someone on a gaming site say you shouldnt be playing games in college lol and if your not stupid about surfing the internet its easy to avoid viruses. also they arent slow at all...unless you have bad hardware.

This is not the place to ask that question. Almost everyone here hates Macs for no good reason. Don't base your decision on anything you read here. Research the products yourself. Go to Best Buy or something, play around with the display models, and decide which one you like better.

You need to evaluate your needs as a computer user. Do you intend to play games? Do you spend a lot of time dealing with PC issues such as OS problems and virus that you can't handle taking care of? Do you want it for the reputation of brand name? What's your budget? Are you willing to pay more for a less powerful computer in order to have a Mac? Do you do graphic design/CAD? Do you like to tweak your computer? How about when something goes wrong? What is the manufacturer's warranty? Things like this should be answered and then a decision on what is best for you can be made.

PC:

Much more variety (both software and hardware)

Upgradeable hardware

Much cheaper

Plays games

Mac:

Solid OS (even though I can't stand it)

Supposedly doesn't have as many problems as a Windows-based PC

First of all, who the hell buys anti-virus software? There's free (and legal) alternatives on the internet, and they usually work a lot better than the crap you pay for.

Second, my family's desktop has lasted 8 years now, with 1 upgrade. We bought it for $700 8 years ago, and 2 years ago, I added 2 GB of RAM for $120. It's not as fast as a new machine, but it's still solid. Never had to format and reinstall, never blue-screened, and has only had 1 virus that I can remember (removed in minutes).

Also, I think you aren't being entirely trutheful with the XPS thing. I have one and it boots up in 15 seconds flat. ;)

No offense, but I hate when people offer up these questions, and they give us nothing to go on. Considering we do not know what you'll use it for, you will only get a slew of biased answers.

If you have the money, the Mac is a decent alternative.

I'm going to say you should get a PC, but I'm not saying that because I have a distaste for Macs. I have a Mac at home, but I both work and play on PCs. Macs are great machines, but they are a niche. If you are going to be just using a PC for things like email, IM, and word processing, there is absolutely no need to spend the extra money on a Mac. Get a cheapo PC.

Wow..... that was an awful comparison with absolutely no substance..... They claimed the mac was faster by un-named benchmarks and customer reviews....... They even went as far as to say it was cheaper (not even close to true)...... You can defiently tell that link was heavily bias

A mac will run you hundreds more. I say go with the PC , you have an account with gamespot so you like the game. The PC will be cheaper, and you can game. A PC should cover all the needs of a averagecollege student.

I would only recommend a Mac if your degree is gonna be in graphic design, digital music, or video editing, but if you need a PC for word processing, email, and internet just go with the PC.

Definitely a PC, Pros and cons of both PC: Pro's: Easily Accessible Cheaper Better Hardware More users Higher Amount of Programs available More customizable Cons: Chance of getting Virus's (solved by free Anti-virus software, Open DNS, and watching where you go on the web) Possible Slower boot up times Microsoft Office expensive (solved by getting open office) Built in software from Computer makers (solved by deleting it) Mac Pro's: Fancy looking Good for Video and photo editing Lesser chance of virus Comes with word processing software built in Cons: Much more expensive Non customizable Less availability of software (fixed by spending more money and dual booting windows) non upgradable, (want an upgrade get a new mac) I would just go for the PC it's much easier, cheap, better, and more customizable. However if you are a graphics design, or video major, than get a mac, as it work best when working with those different medias.

People complain about the cost of Macs, but you really get what you pay for. There computers are solidly built and the integration is very smooth because everything is made by one company and designed to work together. As more people buy Macs, the cheaper they become; the whole line of desk tops has just been revamped and have not increased in price at all. Also, the re-sale value of Macs is higher. After four years my PC would not have fetched half of what I bought it for; Macs retain a higher percentage of their value over the same length of time, even longer. If I ever wanted to upgrade, in the end I'd probably spend just as much as I would on a new PC but with all the reliablity you get with a Mac. Plus, if you use Boot Camp, it's like getting another computer, one that runs even Vista faster than a PC. I think most people don't care about customization, but those that do can still tweak the system around in just as many ways and if they're really dedicated, can customize the innards too. I suspect that as Apple's market share increases, upgrading and easier customization will be offered. I eventually got sick of defragging my PC, emptying out the temp files, running virus checks and jumping through all these hoops just to keep it running properly, and it's STILL a waste of time. Upgrading and customizing the hard drive has not helped it retain its value. Of course Windows has a couple of advantages, but nothing will be enough of a reason for me to buy another PC. I think people have memories of the old Mac systems, but seriously, OS X is the wave of the future.

Dude - Take it from me, as an owner of both a Macbook and a gaming PC... (and I'm a fan of both operating systems) GET A MAC. Other than for Gaming -- the mac is infinitely superior. You're loaded with bloatware with a PC, which you have to uninstall... Then you'll have to constantly update drivers and anti-virus / anti-spyware patches. and you'll definately have to maintain your PC way more strictly in order to keep it running at a good speed. I hate to pull out an advert slogan, but Mac really do just work. Other than for games, my mac has been infinitely superior to my PC. I used to be a mac hater because i'm not used to them and they seem strange, and i didn't like the idea of moving away from my traditional Windows. I think a lot of people here are like that. Get a Mac... you really won't regret it...

Hmm, let's see, PC's have a better OS (whether Vista or XP) and run games better. They also cost less for a better computer. Macs "don't get viruses" (never mind that a good anti-virus program costs maybe $20-25) and have become mildly trendy among college students. Take your pick. ;)

You'll be happier with a PC. They pretty much have unlimited capabilities.

The only good reason to get a Mac for college is that no one is going to want to steal it.

To me, its an easy answer..PC!

I work in design and I have always been conflicted between owning a pc and a mac. In the design world, most designers swear by a mac rather than using a pc. I however, have always used a PC and never had any problems designing or using it for personal use as well.

I would definately suggest a PC for college. Not only can you save money, but you will get more for what you are paying for. Sure you won't be the talk of the town in the library, with your fancy Mac, but you can go to sleep at nights knowing that you didn't spend $300-500+ more than what you should have for some flair.
