So I accidentally stepped on my laptop and now the screen is messed up. There's a whole bunch of multi-colored lines on the left side and there's also this nasty looking black mark on the left hand concern of the screen. I can't seem to do anything to get rid of these lines.

Do I need to buy a buy a new screen and replace the messed up one (I heard that can be pretty expensive) or is there anything I can do to get this crap off my screen?

New screen or new laptop. I remember breaking my 24 inch LCD, I got so pissed a punched the screen (it was a very light punch tho) and I had to get it fixed. Thankfully my dad knew a guy who could replace it for free (not illegal).

Damnit. I hope a new screen doesn't cost too much. If it does, I'll probably just replace the whole laptop (probably could use a new one anyway).

If it was just a few lines on the screen, I'd probably justt deal with it, but the left side of the screen is pretty messed up.

Well, if you don't really need to take it everywhere, you can just hook up an external screen to your laptop too for the time being until you figure out a way to replace the screen or the entire laptop. Usually you can google your laptop's model number and find a way to take it apart and/or find a new/used/refurbished screen. Taking apart non-apple laptops are super easy, well at least for me.

I'm curious, what is your laptop? What is the model numbr?

Replacing them isn't too hard or difficult. But as already started you finished the screen for good. However.. just make sure you dont ruin it putting it in. Laptop screens are somewhat fragile to be handled by the bare hands. Maybe go to the pc section to ask for tips on it?

It's a Toshiba NB305-N442BL. It's really small.

I do have an external screen, but I let somebody pawn it.

Yeah, I'll probably do that if I decide to replace the screen myself. I imagine it saves alot of money to do it yourself.

I guess you've been...pawned.... hahahaha  :D :|

Anyway, I found the following screen replacements between $30-$100:

http://www.amazon.com/TOSHIBA-NB305-N442BL-LAPTOP-SUBSTITUTE-REPLACEMENT/dp/B003YBSE6Y

http://www.bing.com/shopping/search?q=NB305-N442BL+screen+replacement&FORM=HURE

http://www.r3electronics.com/Toshiba-Netbook-NB305-N442BL-LCD-Screen-10.1-inch-Glossy-LED-WSVGA-1024x600-TruBrite.html

http://www.ebay.com/itm/TOSHIBA-MINI-NB305-N442BL-LAPTOP-LCD-SCREEN-10-1-WSVGA-/180579859353?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0

If you don't feel comortable doing this, you can either find a technician to do it for you. In that case, it will cost you about a laptop (maybe). If you don't want to repair it, you can always just convert the laptop to a desktop by buying a desktop monitor, usb keyboard and mouse and hide the laptop.

The screen replacement prices are pretty reasonable. Not sure how I feel about replacing it myself. I might take the advice of the post who suggested asking for tips in the PC forum just to get a feel for how easy it will be for me to replace it myself.

As for the bolded, a good idea might be to buy a new laptop (to use on the go) and turn the messed up laptop into a desktop so it doesn't go to waste. I wouldn't even have to buy a desktop monitor because the person who pawned my external monitor is pretty reliable and will get it out if I ask them to.

Well, like I said, taking apart non-apple laptops are pretty easy. You jsut need to map out where all the screws you are removing. What I would do is get pieces of paper, label them as laptop case, motherboard, screen hinges... and on the papers, I would put x's, o's, L's to mark where I removed the screws. The different letters would be the different types of screws (if any). This approach has greatly reduced the extra screws left over after reassembly. You can easily find some general LCD replacement videos on YouTube.
