So I've been a big comic fan for years now, though mostly of the more "mature" stuff off of Dark Horse, Vertigo, Image, etc.

I've tried a couple times now to get into manga and have twice now failed and fled back to American comics. I read/own the entirety of Death Note, which i quite enjoyed (even if the last few volumes were kind of weak). However, that ended with me picking up the first volume of Hellsing (i loved the anime) and being turned off by the horrendous writing/plotting.

Later on, i tried to get into Bleach by recommendation, and while the writing was passable, the artwork was just awful and again I went back to American comics.

So does anyone have any recommendations? People i know have really hyped Blade of the Immortal. How is that? Same goes for Blame!. Is Akira worth the trek?

Just so you know, i'm not a fan of Japanese comedy/romance AT ALL. Also, while you CAN recommend things like Berserk to me that have five million volumes....i wouldn't be unhappy if recommended series under 15 volumes

oh, and the first person to make a yaoi recommendation gets their face pushed in.

Thanks for your help guys :)

While it may be short, it takes forever to read. There's so much dialogue in it.

Yeah it takes a while to put all the details together and see what's going on.

I watched the anime instead rather than reading the manga, but that's just me.

I started the manga, but went to the anime. I don't have the patience to read that detailed of a manga on a computer screen...

I'm still lost at the very conclusion with Mikami's book...Awesome series, though.

Battle Angel Alita (9 volumes) and Planetes (4 volumes). They're my favorite completed mangas. Both are science-fiction.

Battle Angel Alita is a bit over-the-top. It's about a robot (with a human brain) found in a scrapyard by a robot mechanic called Ido. She's lost all her memories (I know, really original) so Ido names her Alita.

Planetes, a guy named Hachimaki works in a space version of a garbage truck. A dangerous job where he and two team mates fly around in a small old space ship called Toy Box looking for debris that could cause problems to any space flight paths around the moon and Earth. Mostly drama but I thought it was really cool and well-written, it's slightly different from other mangas I've read.

Monster by Naoki Urasawa

Review - "...Forget Professor Moriarty or Hannibal Lecter; Johan could crumble them both for breakfast. Good Dr. Tenma's epic quest to bring Johan to justice involves bodies galore, assassins, cross-dressing, Nazi experiments, the Czech secret service, Johan's beautiful twin sister, a vindictive ex-fiancee with a drinking problem, a Javert-like inspector who cannot forget anything and one of the creepiest children's books you'll ever read. Urasawa is a national treasure in Japan, and if you ain't afraid of picture books, you'll see why. For those of you who like your suspense red-hot but with a beautiful beating heart, Monster is for you. 'At last [the Monster] had found a name, but there was no longer anyone around to call him by it.'"

asdf

MPD Psycho

"MPD-Psycho, the most-requested manga series in recently memory, has found a fitting home at Dark Horse Manga, where it will be presented uncut and uncensored in all of its controversial and unflinchingly grotesque glory! If Takashi Miike's MPD-Psycho television series still has you confused and reeling, the original manga series that inspired the show is sure to take you on a longer, darker journey into madness. Enjoy the 11-volume MPD-Psycho series for all of its absurd twists, sci-fi touches and inventive torture scenes, but you'll also be mesmerized by the plethora of odd conspiracies and case files found in Otsuka and Tajima's uncontrollable, urban horrorshow. In MPD-Psycho Volume 1, police detective Kobayashi Yousuke's life is changed forever after a serial killer notices something "special" about him. That same killer mutilates Kobayashi's wife and kick-starts a "multiple personality battle" within Kobayashi that pushes him into a complex tempest of interconnected deviants and evil forces. Earning praise for its consistently shocking plotlines and Tajima's clean, arresting art **** MPD-Psycho is the manga event of the decade!"

asdf

Gunsmith Cats

"Rally Vincent and Minnie May Hopkins are experts in their respective fields of marksmanship and explosives, but they're so cute you'd never know. Neither would the perps unlucky enough to be their hunted. Presented for the first time in the authentic Japanese format, these giant-sized volumes are action-packed, unretouched, and sure to please the gun-nuts, auto buffs, and manga maniacs!"

asdf

Buddha by Osamu Tezuka

"Tezuka, the master of Japanese comics, mixes his own characters with history as deftly as he transfers the most profound, complex emotions onto extremely cartoony characters, and his work defies easy categorization. In Buddha, originally serialized in the 1970s and one of his last works, he lavishly retells the life of Siddhartha, who isn't even born until page 268. Instead, Tezuka introduces Chapra, a slave who attempts to escape his fate by posing as the son of a general; Tatta, a crazed wild child pariah who communes with animals; Chapra's slave mother, who stands by him no matter what; and Naradatta, a monk attempting to discover the meaning of strange portents of the Buddha's birth. Throughout the book, the characters engage in fresh and unexpected adventures, escapes and reverses, as they play out Tezuka's philosophical concern with overcoming fate and the uselessness of violence. Despite episodes of extreme brutality and broad humor, the core of the story revolves around various set pieces, as when Tatta sacrifices himself to a snake to save Naradatta and Chapra's mom. After a moment of intense emotion, the scene is upended by the arrival of a bandit who mocks their attempts at keeping their karmic slates clean. "Why were you all fussing over some stupid trade? Why not just kill the snake and eat it?" The answer unfolds over succeeding volumes. Heavily influenced by Walt Disney, Tezuka's often cute characters may take some getting used to, but his storytelling is strong and clean. Appearing in handsome packages designed by Chip Kidd, this is a stunning achievement."

gdsf

Hikaru no Go

"After stumbling across a haunted Go board, irresponsible Hikaru Shindo discovers that the spirit of a master player has taken up residence in his consciousness. In his pursuit of the "Divine Move," Fujiwara-no-Sai awakens in Hikaru an untapped genius for the game, and soon the schoolboy is chasing his own dream--defeating the famed Go prodigy Akira Toya!"

sdfg

Shaman Warrior

"Presented in the original Korean format, Shaman Warrior is a dramatic fantasy series with a kinetic ****that will appeal to fans of Blade of the Immortal and Vagabond! From the desert wastelands emerge two mysterious warriors, master wizard Yarong and his faithful servant Batu. On a grave mission from their king, they have yet to realize the whirlwind of political movements and secret plots which will soon engulf them and change their lives forever. When Yarong is mortally injured, Batu must fulfill a secret promise to leave Yarong's side and protect his master's child. As Batu seeks to find and hide the infant, Yarong reveals another secret to those who have tracked him down to finish him off - the deadly, hidden power of a Shaman Warrior!"

sdfg

Mahou Tsukai Kurohime

"Kurohime is a big busty witch with the command of magical guns. She was once foolish enough to challenge the Gods and in doing so was punished. A curse was put on her that turned her into a little girl. The only way she can break this curse and turn back in to her big bad buxom self is to fall in love! This premise leads Kurohime on all kinds of crazy adventures in a magical land full of dangerous surprises."

thanks for all the recommendations guys. And to those who said Death Note took too long to read, had to much dialog, i lol at thee. As an American comics fan, Manga is usually a quick read for me. I imagine you guys would have a heart attack at the average Vertigo comic :P. Anyway, there's a lot of stuff on here that strikes my interest. Thanks Lord Daemon in particular - that post looks like a lot of work, but it gives me a much better idea of the mangas you're recommending. Thanks so much. Monster looked very interesting when i came across it at the bookstore Also , i forget which poster it was, but thanks for the recommendation of Battle Angel Alita; it's been recommended to me time and time again, yet i always forget it. Unfortunately, i have an ex of the same name who was a huge fan of Battle Angel Alita and identified with her. Perhaps unsurprisingly, she turned out to be a real nightmare with, shall we say, some "issues." Hopefully i can overcome the bad taste that's in my mouth as the poor, unfortunate manga shouldn't be the victim of my awful love life :P

You actually read Bleach and actually thought the predictable story was better than the art?! Oh man no wonder you fled back to comic books. hehe Please read Blade Of The Immortal. That's a highly praised. And then Berserk. The anime's incredible and I hear its only half the story of the manga. Personally, I'd recommend the only manga I've read, Samurai Executioner. It's about a man who has just become the next samurai executioner. He does some pure genius executions and solves some great crime via katana slaying. I also suggest all the manga I plan on reading myself: Yu yu Hakusho (it's the classic that Bleach literally ripped off, has INGENIOUS tactical fights and is extremely funny) The 3 Grappler Baki series (I have seen panels of Yujiro Hanma making George W. Bush look like a b!tch and then a guy dropkicking Bush. 'Nuff said) The Guyver (from the 12 episode classic anime series only I consider The Guyver to be Japan's Superman and Spider-Man. 'Nuff said) Trigun Maximum (Just heard its better written than the anime series and Wolfwood is more of a badass) Rurouni Kenshin (I hear that the final arc which wasn't animated is better than any of the ones from the anime) LONE WOLF AND CUB (From the legendary artist and writer of Lone Wolf And Cub. Lone Wolf And Cub's live action movies are also at the VERY top of my most wanted DVDs list. 'Nuff said.) Afro Samurai Fullmetal Alchemist I'm glad you're not one of those weird guys who like romantic manga. I have NONE of that BS on my list. Just great action manga!!!!!

Battle Angel Alita (9 volumes) and Planetes (4 volumes). They're my favorite completed mangas. Both are science-fiction.

Oh yes Battle Angel Alita. I need to read that then watch the manga. I can't wait for James Cameron to make it into one of the biggest scifi movies ever.

If you're just looking for "dark" manga, then try Claymore, Blood Plus, Melty Blood (if you can find it), Higurashi - Where They Cry, and/or Zombie Loan. Zombie Loan has a more comedic approach to it, but some sections are really dark. Also, everyone is a complete asshat to the main character for no apparent reason, which confused me. If you're willing to expand your tastes a bit, I'd recommend Love Hina, GTO, Suzunarii, SS Astro, Shoulder-a-Coffin Kuro and Sunshine Sketch.

I actually just finished reading what's been written so far of Gantz and as long as you don't mind loads of gratuitous violence and explicit nudity then you should definitely check it out. The artwork is fantastic and the story isn't half bad.
