Then mods shouldn't ban people for ban dodging.MrPraline
I can think of only two solutions and neither are any better than the current system, really. Either admins deal with ban dodgers, which they probably don't have time for, or mods are allowed to check IPs, which we'd all cry about because of privacy.

Out of all the "so and so is banned" threads that I've seen this is the only one that saddens me greatly. Upon a quick review of the thread however, there does appear to be some hope that this is simply a misunderstanding and hopefully the clerical error can be rectified and Neon will be back soon. This is my hope at least.

What error was made? I read the report and I would have done the same thing. There is no way for me to know who is serious or joking therefore I will ban people for saying they were banned previously or underage. Do NOT joke about these things if they are not fact because you will have one really, really hard time trying to convince Customer Support you were kidding.

Well now though there is a way to validate it by checking the IPs.

If someone says they're ban dodging they should get banned? That's just like giving someone a life sentence for saying they murdered someone.

Maybe your reading this different to me but I see the way Neon was wording it as if someone did create an alt account to ban-dodge.

Not to get into an argument, but Funky didn't blame you specifically for it, and also, his post was ambiguous, yes, but I'mpretty darn sure everybody else in that thread took it in the opposite way to what the mod who banned him did. Granted it was worded poorly but a perma-ban for that is ridiculous. If you had evidence to support the theory that he was a BD'er then no complaints here, otherwise, well, you know my stance on it.

If we let him slide with how we worded it, then we will have to let whoever actually ban dodges slide if they word it the same way Neon-Tiger did. We have zero tolerance for ban dodgers. I think you all need to calm down. Is there anything ayanami can do about this? No. It's all up to Neon to go to customer support. He has the only power in this situation, so everybody needs to stop blaming the innocent mods who had nothing to do with any of this.

My guess was that the reasonable proceedure in such cases is first checking the IPs.

This is what he posted:
[QUOTE="ayanami_rei"]What will you gain by ban dodging?Neon-Tiger
]Community privileges I got taken away when banned.

As Llama said earlier, answering that question in the first person is grammatically correct, so it's obviously a case of ban first, ask questions later. I'd have thought it would have been wiser to have contacted the admins first to check if he was really a ban dodger; saves him time aswell, since CS can take months to reply...

There's no need to let anyone slide if the mods who have ban authority actually check to see if someone's ban-dodging. It just seems a little silly to ban someone because of a post that could have been misinterpreted. I don't know how long it would take to find out if someone is indeed ban-dodging but surely it'd be better to take the time to be sure about it.

Thats not sure. Its not even that usual since in order for a user to get IP banned takes a lot of crap from his/her part.

Therefore practically there is no need to change IP if you are willing to behave the next time since no IP is checked upon the sign up unless its a banned IP.

[QUOTE="MAILER_DAEMON"][QUOTE="KOTORkicker"] we can discuss here then. :PKOTORkicker

After the crap you just pulled, there's nothing to discuss. I stand by what I said though.

After the 'crap I just pulled'? get bent.

you walk around this place condescending to users and then asking why they have such a hatred of the mods, maybe you ought to turn around to yourself some day and ask yourself this: "what am I doing to make them respect me?" you're doing absolutely nothing to make them respect you. you garner hate, and you know why you garner it? because of things like this. things like 'the crap you just pulled'. I think you ought to re-evaluate what you're doing here; after so long as a mod I think you've gone on a bit of a power trip. and you know what? its totally unreasonable.

the reason people respect mods like duxup and hungry_bunny is because they're actually human and workable with. you walk around with a chip on your shoulder, almost as if you were an admin, for no reason (I am not saying in this that admins have a chip on their shoulder, what I'm saying is that admins and mods are two different ranks).

I'd respect how you handle matters if you were an admin; but you're not. your conduct is totally unsuitable for that of a mod. 'crap I just pulled'.. what? ugh. and yeah, for the people in this thread, I got modded with a point loss. simply for trying to keep the people here informed. not like mailer wants do that.

No, he worded it saying he had previously been banned, and since he was posting that on a new account, you can assume he was ban dodging, and mods don't like that.

We have to take action when we have zero tolerance of ban dodgers and underage users. If someone goes up to a police officer at random and says "I murdered someone" they will be arrested and questioned. You can't tell if someone is joking or not, or if they are stating hypothetically UNLESS they make it known that they are saying it in hypothetical terms.

Gosh its seem no matter how softly you word things on public forums somebody always finds a way to take offense. My post was being written before I had actually read the body from which his banning was inacted. I was simply going by the fact of his statement that he wasn't ban dodging and was banned for such. Taking Neon at his word I assumed a simple misunderstanding had occurred and hoped that after some communication with the Admins that this problem could be resolved and he could be restored. I was making no attempt to cast aspersions upon the administration or any mod in particular. The error I was referring to was nothing more than the occurance itself not anybody in particular.

Mods do not have access to the user database. They can only mod, if they feel the need that someone needs banning then a report is filed to the admins.

Well if that's the case then tell him to appeal it through Customer Support. I guess this ends the thread then, yes?

No kidding. What's the point of fighting each other when all we can do is hope Neon goes to Customer Support?

Not to get into an argument, but Funky didn't blame you specifically for it, and also, his post was ambiguous, yes, but I'mpretty darn sure everybody else in that thread took it in the opposite way to what the mod who banned him did. Granted it was worded poorly but a perma-ban for that is ridiculous. If you had evidence to support the theory that he was a BD'er then no complaints here, otherwise, well, you know my stance on it.

ayanami_rei

If we let him slide with how we worded it, then we will have to let whoever actually ban dodges slide if they word it the same way Neon-Tiger did. We have zero tolerance for ban dodgers. I am sorry that it happened, but it's not my fault he worded it incorrectly. He had time to fix it from the time he posted that sentence to the time he was banned. It's not only our fault we interpreted it that way, but it is also his fault for posting it the way that he did. And not everybody interpreted the way you did. horgen123 interpreted the way we did. Shouldn't his IP have been run first before he was banned? I notice people using the term banned when they mean suspended.

I have a feeling that this ban will go down in OT history.

pvtdonut54

It will be written in the Tome of OT. Maybe Neon-Tiger is the OT Jesus?

So you can also get banned for wording sentences in ways the mods/admins don't like, isn't that just dandy???

Way to misconstrue what I stated above:?

If he was stating it as if he was banned, then he should have said "Community privileges I got taken away IF I was banned."ayanami_rei
-_- True, though he never said 'When I was banned,' in his post. Just 'when banned,' which in no way indicates that his account had been previously banned. I still think checking his ip would've been easier, but heck, at least we'll probably see him in a year when CS get through to his complaint.

[QUOTE="MAILER_DAEMON"][QUOTE="Teenaged"]Well now though there is a way to validate it by checking the IPs.

clyde46

Don't people change IPs to dodge a ban though? :o

Proxy FTW!

I am not saying there is no way to avoid it, but simply basing something on wording (if I were a mod) would make want to check again. Although practically considering proxies and other ways it is of no use, still I would not make such a quick move.

You've got to be ****ing kidding me.

I think you all need to calm down. Is there anything ayanami can do about this? No. It's all up to Neon to go to customer support. He has the only power in this situation, so everybody needs to stop blaming the innocent mods who had nothing to do with any of this.

I must agree with this post here...no point taking your frustrations out on the mods...just going to end up getting someone else baned...

No, more discretion is needed.

I've always felt liek saying something like that.cyberdarkkid

As have I. Though, I have an odd feeling in the pit of my stomach that soon enough, that post will be gone. :? Going through past experiences of my own, you can be suspended because a mod wants you to "drop your attitude."
