I can think of only two solutions and neither are any better than the current system, really. Either admins deal with ban dodgers, which they probably don't have time for, or mods are allowed to check IPs, which we'd all cry about because of privacy.

I don't think people should care about their privacy... this is a private site that they agree to a set of rules. Mods should very much be able to see IP's especially to avoid things like this. Bans should only take place if there is proof that the person is ban-dodging. Just because someone says something is a stupid reason to ban them. Very stupid.

Thats not sure. Its not even that usual since in order for a user to get IP banned takes a lot of crap from his/her part.

Therefore practically there is no need to change IP if you are willing to behave the next time since no IP is checked upon the sign up unless its a banned IP.

Well my knowledge comes from seeing many ban-dodgers and there have been plenty discussion revealing the "techniques" of ban-dodging.

You are all missing the point. If you are going to keep thinking that he's innocent and did nothing wrong, then fine. Think the way you want. Just realize that we have to do things to keep people from ban dodging. We cannot let someone slip and then say no to others. That's not fair. It's how things work. You don't like it, then fine. No, he worded it saying he had previously been banned, and since he was posting that on a new account, you can assume he was ban dodging, and mods don't like that.

Because dealing punishment based on assumptions is always the reasonable and correct thing to do, right?

Well if I had it my way I'd be lead a troop of protestors with picketing signs, demanding the the mod in question admit his/her mistake, but heck, I'm not in charge. :P

This thread went downhill fast. Neon-Tiger doesn't need everyone here going down on him. If it was a mistake, he'll try to get it fixed. The mods acted as they should. Responding to what Kotorkicker said, if they weren't human, they wouldn't have made a mistake( assuming it was a mistake), so stop trying to be a white knight and acting like you're trying to achieve justice here. Gamespot has rules. It appeared as if Neon-Tiger violated them. Mods took action.

Or when they fail to interpret correctly. Then even if he goes through customer service to get his account back, the mod that made the mistake gets away scott free, whereas Neon makes a little mistake and gets banned for it. Great System.

It was an example. Nothing more. And like I said, I didn't ban him. How is my fault? I was on the line if he was serious or if he meant in hypothetical terms, and for the last time, I was using "you" in general terms.

Not really trying to start anything, but there's no way he can be suspended until his IP is run, and when that happens either ban him or lift the suspension?

The thing is there was no mistake. As I said with my first post in this thread I would have done the same exact thing. You need to take care in what you type since there is no way for us to know if users are joking or not.

You know what's frustrating about this thread? Some of us wanted to change the policy of keeping the reason for bans private. This thread is proving that those who think it should be private are right... everything gets misconstrued, the confidentiality of private messages gets compromised, and people end up being too angry to deal with the truth. :(

Neon was ace, he helped me pick out a decent set of headphones. But I must say, this is the first time (at least since I've been more active) that I've seen so many people get angry at the mods like this. :? Either something has seriously gone askew and the mods are too proud to admit error or this is a genuine ban-worthy event that can't be disclosed. Some mods appear to be throwing petrol on the fire, mind...

I'ld advise mailer to do the same, modding him for saying he was PMing mailer is completely out of line, that's standard procedure and happens constantly.
