I just got an email from Netflix saying that starting in September, the price of my plan to stream movies and rent 1 DVD at a time is increasing from $9.99 to $15.99.

I am very disappointed with this price increase, especially after I heard that they are removing a bunch of shows and movies as well. I decided to cancel my membership with them because of these changes.

I just wanted to give a heads up to anyone who was considering signing up with them.

Is anyone here a current Netflix member? And if so, will you be cancelling as well or will you continue to a be a member?

I never got such an email. If that's the case, I may be gone unless they really step it up in the stream department.

Well this sucks hard.

@Pirate: It's true, go to "your account" and click "change plan". There should be a message informing you of it.

Meh, I have no problem with it. With the amount of movies I watch from their service, it's still a steal.

It is still a good price. It's less than the cost of 3 blockbuster rentals. Just one TV series is upwards of $20-30 to rent each since you have to rent one disk at a time.

I got the email too; they basically said they were splitting the plan into two plans. 7.99 for unlimited streaming and 7.99 for unlimited dvd rentals. Since I dont use the DVD part, I'm just gonna change it to unlimited streaming for 7.99 (which is cheaper than what Im paying now I think.) No biggie.

yeah it really sucks especially for some shows (especially anime) which have a tendency to put only 3 or 4 episodes on a disc which is absolutely terrible

Yeah I have friends' using my netflix streaming too and theyd put stuff in the queue randomly I guess so these DVDs would show up at my house and I;d never return them. Stuff I had no interest in watching either, like Full House Season 1. =P

Yea really. You'd think they would be better off just leaving it 9.99 becauce I would of left 1 dvd on there for that price even though I use it maybe once every couple of months.

There really should be some sort of discount or bundle price if you want both plans. I'd probably keep my membership if there was.

I rarely rent blu-rays. The only time I rent them is during the summer. I'm pretty sure that my parents are going to want to cancel it. Just as long as we keep the streaming.

That is true, but a lot of people love sitting at home streaming movies straight into their laps. The movie guys still get a portion of the rental fees.

Got the e-mail, disappointing, but can't say I didn't see it coming. Will either be cancelling of getting the streaming only package.

Actually, the best thing about streaming from Netflix is the amount of TV shows they have on there that you can't buy on DVD (Looks at the entire Nick 90's catalogue).

The plans are still the same....$7.99 per month for Unlimited Streaming, that's what I got when I first jumped on the Free trial back in January. Nothing has changed at all.

The increase price applies ONLY on other membership Plans.

I think I am one of the few who uses a big supply of DVDs from them for TV shows not streaming so I probably pay the most on these boards. But looking at the account page it isn't going up on my plan that much so I will live.

It's changing so they can afford to keep sony movies. With the increased pricing they should be able to re-negotiate with Sony and keep many of the movies they were forced to pull. In today's economy unlimited movies for $15/month is still a pretty good deal.

In today's economy, it's also not good to increase your prices. Most places are lowering their prices to increase their business.

Well, the DVDs for the old Nick shows haven't exactly been straightforward. Only a few weeks ago did Nick officially bring out Rocko's Modern Life season 1 to retail stores. There are a few shows that you can get off of Amazon (like Rugrats and Doug), but those discs are made when you order them and you can't get them in stores. Shows like Double Dare and Kenan and Kel are nowhere to be seen.

It's smart business if you can no longer afford to keep running your business the same. Without raising prices customers won't have the same service anymore. It's either raise prices or stop offering. In the end customers would rather have than not.

I guess that's true. Apart from a few of my favourites, the only movies I buy are in some sort of collection (The Shrek movies bundles together, Disney's Diamond line, etc.)

Its a catch 22, if you drop stuff, your loosing people, if your raise your prices by 50+ percent your loosing people.

Now netflix doesn't seen as cheap.

Plus netflix was having an effect on piracy of movies and tv shows, just becuase it was so cheap.

They have really opened the door for hulu plus
