It's just easier for Westerners to differentiate between the comic book form (manga) and the animated cartoon form (anime). Just because the origins mean something else doesn't mean you should get angsty about it. It's like complaining that the Japanese word for "bread" is the same as the French but in English it's a cooking utensil.

Actually the "Man" Kanji in Manga translates as whimsy, vague, idle pratter, half-hearted, aimless in a rambling way and other ways that when combined with the "ga" meaning drawings simply signifying light-hearted and/or unimportant drawings. It originally comes from the great artists Hokusai who dubbed his silly, non-serious drawings to be "manga" or "silly drawings". They had a different word for comic type drawings in his time before he used manga which is "gesaku" which means drawings of a low or non-important nature.

But history aside your claims, although not necessarily false, are being changed by history and the nature of how language is used and presented in the world. Right now the hard definition of manga to the world means Japanese comics, and anime means animation of Japanese origin. This may not have been the original intention of the words as they are used in Japan, but that is becoming the prevailing definition.

Given that the TC has edited/deleted his own post, I'm going to go ahead and lock this as there is no longer anything left to discuss of the original topic.
