What do you think of this? I think its absolutely despicable, freedom of speech or not, this is plain wrong, and will garner the kind of negative attention the industry doesn't deserve. Sounds like the guy is just trying to push the limits, but this is too far.

Yeah. That's pretty freaking foul. And the developer should spend an eternity in my dungeon.

Yeah that is pretty despicable. It is only going to serve to further ruin the reputation of video games.

Yeah, I guess that's pretty offensive. However, as you noted, people are allowed to make offensive crap these days.

I can't imagine a game developer's motivations for this beyond trying to be controversial and despicable.

Yes it's quite horrible. However they are fully within their rights to make such a thing. If one dislikes it they can simply not purchase it/ignore it.

What issues do you have with it? Is it the killing of innocent victims? How is that any worse than beating hookers to death or running over pedestrians in GTA?

Is it the glorification of the turds who did it in real life? How is that any worse than playing as the Germans in Call of Duty multiplayer?

It's not the killing of innocent civilians (Postal 2 does it and it's one of my favorite FPS's) it's the fact that it does not do it "tongue-in-cheek". When you honestly advocate the killing of innocent people, I have a problem with it.

Hmm...I hadn't considered GTA, but then I don't play GTA. Good point. Now in regards to the Germans, you play as a soldier in that game, who wasn't necessarily involved in atrocities.

So if a Columbine game took a few liberties with the story by turning the shooters into a pair of wise-cracking hotshots, and added an upbeat soundtrack, you'd be okay with it?

Onlyif "Columbine" was removed from the game completely. It would have to be a completely fictional locale.

I see nothing in the description of this mod that states that it's actually set in Columbine or any other real location. So you should have no problem with it.

I don't. But if it were to name an actualy school (like the OP stated) then I would have a problem with it.

That's kinda shocking if you ask me. Making an entire game based on THAT? I'm banking on the fact that the sales of that game won't shoot through the roof. In fact, they should make a terrorist game. Yeah, like one that you can fly planes into buildings and martyr yourself too while you're at it. Hey, freedom of speech right?

I had an idea for that on my second tour. We were doing low-intensity warfare, and I was thinking, "Man, they should make a GTA kinda game, except where you're a terrorist." You'd steal BMWs from rich people, taxis and old Volkswagens from the middle-c|ass, and donkey carts from the poor. Like, the goal of the game would be to move some public opinion slider completely against the Americans, but also to make money. Or maybe it'd be like Elder Scrolls, where you come up with your own objectives. Like, you could work for the Americans sometimes, but you could also betray them. You could run criminal syndicates, and if one of your rivals got too powerful, you'd go tell the Americans he's a terrorist, and then they'd kill or arrest him, wiping out your competition (which was actually a major issue).

You know. Let your imagination run wild.

If someone wants to do that than yes, they should. Freedom of goddamn speech is correct.

BTW: it's not a standalone game, it's a Half-Life 2mod.

To be frank if video games were made on the bass of what will make games look good or bad then we never would have gotten anything more mature than Pac-Man.

There is quite a difference between mature games and games that alllow you to enact school shootings. There's a reason that Grand Theft Auto games don't have children or schools in them.

What issues do you have with it? Is it the killing of innocent victims? How is that any worse than beating hookers to death or running over pedestrians in GTA?

Is it the glorification of the turds who did it in real life? How is that any worse than playing as the Germans in Call of Duty multiplayer?

Yes, to introduce a sense of choice/realism and for shock value. The entire game is not based around killing innocents however.

The point is that even within mature entertainment there are boundaries. I think there are degrees of objectionableness (that's not a word, but oh well).

Also, context makes the mod worse. GTA is not all that much worse than a violent movie whereas this game is using real shootings that effected real people as its basis.

Drugs and gang warfare effect real people as well. That's pretty much what Grand Theft Auto is all about. What makes it better than this?

That's quite the rationalization - you don't HAVE to kill innocent people; it's just a happy little bonus? Anyhoo, what about all the main story missions that include you gunning down cops? How do you rationalize that?

It is clearly fictional whereas this mod is trying to mimic real life shootings.

In fact, the visuals in Grand Theft Auto games are sort of cartoony (cartoon realism is a good word for it) and the characters are ciaractures, which alone makes it seem more like fantasy.

You get rewarded in the school shooter game for killing innocents that is what sets it apart from GTA. Since GTA is set in a city it wouldn't make sence for the game not to have innocents.

For some reason when I read that, I thought of the Ground Zero Mosque debate.

To me, just like the mosque, I think that just because you CAN do something, certainly doesn't mean you SHOULD. If someone who reaches a certain age truly doesn't understand right from wrong, I'm not sure how you can ever teach them.

Rationalize it all you want, it's the same thing. Both games are mimicking real life violence. Both games have you gunning down innocent people. Both games mimick events that tragically effect real people if real life.

And why shouldn't the people who are building the mosque build it? What moral reason is there against it?

[QUOTE="GreySeal9"]It is clearly fictional whereas this mod is trying to mimic real life shootings.

In fact, the visuals in Grand Theft Auto games are sort of cartoony (cartoon realism is a good word for it) and the characters are ciaractures, which alone makes it seem more like fantasy.

Rationalize it all you want, it's the same thing. Both games are mimicking real life violence. Both games have you gunning down innocent people. Both games mimick events that tragically effect real people if real life.

What you see as rationalization I see as recognizing differences between the two "situations" so to speak.

I basically agree. I'm pretty sure GTA has in-game dynamics for raising as much mayhem as you can, this is it's sort of a minigame. Or hey, how about Oblivion where you can be an assassin? You have a quest to murder and entire family.

Legally they can. Morally, I see no need to cause further harm/hurt/pain to the thousands of family members who have lost mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, etc. I'm assuming by your line of questioning that you disagree, and that is fine. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
