"69 cents, 99 cents and $1.29, with most albums still priced at $9.99." are what the songs will cost now. To my understanding if the song is new it will cost 1.29, if its semi-old it will cost 99cents and if its like from the 1950's or you know a really old song then it will be 69 sents (hehe 69) I would rather have all songs be the same 99 cents. wbu?

I say meh at this. Anytime I don't buy actual CDs and rip the tracks myself I use either Amazon's MP3 store or lala.

I guess it's kind of a pleasant surprise to those buying older songs... But I don't like the idea of brand new songs costing $1.29 or whatever. The new songs used to cost $.99, so Apple's just digging a deeper hole for themselves when it comes to their greed. Unless, from what I just heard, it's DRM-free. Or whatever that's called. In which case, I guess it's kind of justified.dreDREb13

I'm not sure all that info is accurate. Here's a good NY Times article on the changes... LINK

It's based on popularity for the most part... not just age.

So, a the brand new Franz Ferdinand song will cost 1.29 when it first comes out, then slip down to .99 after a few weeks, and then once popularity slips, it'll go down to .69

But, it's also at the discretion of those selling music. Indie artists may benefit from being able to sell music for 69 cents right away. I think you'll see big labels/artists with the higher pricing system, while others will stick with the lower two.

Overall, we're gonna benefit.

Also, I'm not sure what "deeper hole" you're talking about. Online music download sales are up over the last 12 months.

Itunes = Fart noise.

DRM = Louder fart noise

Buying CD's, ripping them into FLAC, Vorbis, and high quality VBR MP3 files = Win.

Yeah right, like most of the good music now days is coming from the mainstream. If you cared about music you would go to concerts. Instead of throwing out money to pay the fat cat at the top.

I don't get consider download music bad. A lot of artists don't either. Most artists make their money off touring anyway. I buy music I like, but downloading music has many positives for the industry such as allowing people to experience music they could never find before.

As far as sources for digital music (legal and otherwise,) that's pretty much the worst anyway.

Unless you like terrible quality, inconsistently-encoded music.

I don't plan on ever buying music via download. I buy games via download, but I doubt I will ever do it with music. There are a couple reasons I don't want to buy music via download. (There are probably others; I just can't really think of exactly what they are right now.):

1. I want the original CD quality work so that I can rip it into any format at any bit rate.

2. If I'm paying money, I want the physical product. There are several reasons for this. One is that if I'm paying money I want the art and whatever else comes with the disc. Another is that I can legally resell it. When you buy a CD you know that you OWN it. You can do whatever you want with it basically, save for make copies and distribute them to other people. If I wanted to let 100 people borrow it I could, and there's nothing any stupid ass lawsuit could do about it. That's a not entirely relevant technicality these days I guess, but the fact remains. On top of this, a lot of older music can be picked up for less than the cost of the digital downloads.

I used to also have the reason of not paying money for crap with DRM on it, which was silly since it clearly didn't do much of anything to keep stuff off of all of the shady sites out there, and only served to punish legitimate customers. Fortunately they seemed to have realized that at least.

I care about music, i just dont pay the rip off price. i go to their concerts to make up for it.

My favorite rationalization. Man, people must go to a hell of a lot of concerts.

Two things: 1. You've decided that your iPod is how you're going to listen to your music for the rest of your life? Not likely. 2. You can change the bit rate for ripped CDs in iTunes settings. 128 kbps mp3 can be pretty bad for some music in my opinion, especially stuff that has a lot of cymbal crashes or certain other things. 196 is usually fine. 128 kbps or possibly even lower of certain other compression formats can be seemingly just as good as 196 kbps mp3.

The iTunes store is irrelevant in my world. Amazon MP3 all the way. I just went to the iTunes store for the first time in a long time to check out the changes. I clicked on iTunes Plus on the homepage and it brought me to a list of all the tracks I could upgrade to iTunes Plus. $59.67 for 291 songs. The catch? I already removed the DRM from all of my music! The entirety of my music collection is unprotected mp3! It would seem they are looking at your purchasing history and not the actual files. What a scam for those that don't know any better. Buyer beware!

if the prices are based more on popularity, then that sounds great. a lot of the bands i like arent terribly popular. of course, i suspect that their will be more "album only" tracks, making the price of indivual songs pointless if you plan on buying the whole album.

now if only itunes would expand their library a bit more. ive been finding more and more bands lately that dont have their best work on itunes or simply dont have anything at all on the service.
