NHL Hockey: Caps vs. Penguins, an objective view from a Caps fan.

As a Caps fan, I've been quietly lurking about Penguins forums to get a feel for the enemy camp. After much research and observation I've come to the conclusion that Ovechkin and Co. don't stand a snowball's chance in 'h-e-[double hockey sticks]' of winning a single game, much less scoring a single goal.

I admit this freely.

It is clear from the Pittsburgh fanbase that their worst case scenario entails a four game sweep and the probable suicide of the Caps first and second lines. After these initial, rather conservative (by comparison) opinions, I have gleaned that the average Pens fan's outlook gets considerably more rosey.

This poll represents the full spectrum of Pittsburgh's faithful and how they feel this playoff series should go.

I have this feeling that the Penguins are going to dominate the series (And yes, I'm saying that because I'm a bitter Rangers fan).

That was a pretty good game, though in all my life I've only watched maybe five games of hockey, all of which were last week.

I have faith in the Hawks, they're gonna pull the series out. And I'm going with the Caps in 6. :)

Today's bottom line: The NHL's two most "European style" hockey teams face off for game one today. There should be plenty of odd-man rushes and scary, swarming onslaughts on both ends. The Caps are more physical. The Pens are a nifty, fast & skillful team. Both will produce copious offensive opportunities.

The Caps are putting four goals on the board today. Will Varlomov keep the Pens from doing the same?

Straight out of my tuchus to you, the 'x' factors are:

-Varlomov for the Caps.

-Bill Guerin for the Pens.

-The refs. With the League's three top players, the NHL wants this one to go seven. Everybody knows it. Will they let the Caps be physical? I expect a few enfuriating, sketchy calls to keep things tight. It'll go both ways.
