Didn't Radiohead do, pay what you think it's worth? And yes, music should be done this way.smack_masta
Yes and no. Radiohead, who I love, still used a major label to sell it at stores. From what I understand NIN will not be doing this.
Hello from Nine Inch Nails.
We're very proud to present a new collection of instrumental music, Ghosts I-IV.
Almost two hours of music recorded over an intense ten week period last fall, Ghosts I-IV sprawls Nine Inch Nails across a variety of new terrain.
Now that we're no longer constrained by a record label, we've decided to personally upload Ghosts I,
the first of the four volumes, to various torrent sites, because we believe BitTorrent is a revolutionary digital distribution method, and we believe in finding ways to utilize new technologies instead of fighting them.
We encourage you to share the music of Ghosts I with your friends, post it on your website, play it on your podcast,
use it for video projects, etc. It's licensed for all non-commercial use under Creative Commons.
We've also made a 40 page PDF book to accompany the album. If you'd like to download it for free,
visit http://ghosts.nin.com/main/pdf
Ghosts I is the first part of the 36 track collection Ghosts I-IV. Undoubtedly you'll be able to find the complete collection on
the same torrent network you found this file, but if you're interested in the release, we encourage you to check it out at ghosts.nin.com, where the complete Ghosts I-IV is available directly from us in a variety of DRM-free digital formats, including FLAC lossless, for only $5. You can also order it on CD, or as a deluxe package with multitrack audio files, high definition audio on Blu-ray disc, and a large hard-bound book.
We genuinely appreciate your support, and hope you enjoy the new music. Thanks for listening.
[QUOTE="nintendorocks"]By the way, link?Wet_SandYes, please. :D
Sorry, you can go to nin.com, but their servers are slammed. At http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00158SHD8/you can download the whole 36 songs, for $5.00. Took 2 minutes on my connection and added them right into my ITunes. From what I've heard it's all instrumental so far, but great.
NIN wrote this, but I don't know if I can post the site..Hello from Nine Inch Nails.

Radiohea used XL to sell it at stores. XL isn't a major label.NIN isn't for everyone, but what about this as a way of putting out music? Obviously it would have to be larger, well known bands to pull this off, but to have no wait time, a free or name your price, to me it just seems like this is the perfect way to distribute music. Being in business I'm always fascinated by the sales or marketing aspect of things I'm interested in, and am very excited if this is the way of the future of music.
This isn't new, though. Even lesser-known bands have done things similar to this.NIN isn't for everyone, but what about this as a way of putting out music? I realize today isn't the first time it's ever happend, but over the last few months with Radiohead and now Nails as larger bands finish their contracts with the labels they may consider it. It's always annoyed me to see a release date 5 months off, and hear a few crappy leaks, to just have the whole thing pop up is a cool thing IMO. I hope all bands who try this method will have enough support to continue it.

Hey, don't forget Trent helped Saul Williams produce and release and album this way too.

Yeah I forgot about Saul's, which I liked, but even in that instance they hyped it for quite a while. The suddeness of this release is what really suprised me. If musicians can just release whatever they want whenever I think it's a win-win for all fans.
