I have like 30 funny things I want to say but I'm just gonna go ahead and slowly back away from this thread.MM87
Good idea, i'll do the same.
Like some said before; to attract the ladies. Sometimes it's the idea of coming from nothing and gaining so much(even if it's just regarding entertainment). For some is to simply say I am better. But mainly it's apart of the mainstream culture of rap and hip-hop. I can understand why some people believe it's a Black thing considering how hip-hop is everywhere today, and a lot of Black men tend to model themselves after what they see in media(for better or worse). Of course the most popular rappers today aren't groups like the once Jurassic 5. I always thought you had to be a MC to be a rapper? :|
Time for a serious answer:
Stereotypically, black people are poor, and white people are rich and racist. So, the first thing a black person does when he or she gets money is flaunt it, as if to say. "Ha! I made it anyway, even though you didn't want me to. Heck, I have more money than you at this point. Take that, Society!" I say stereotypically because the topic title is generalizing like there's no tomorrow. Not every black person does that and I would appreciate it if that thought were exterminated from your head.
Check out "What They Do" by the Roots and "Dumb it Down" by Lupe Fiasco
For the record, everyone shows off when they get money, it's just not as obvious. Look at the first video filmed by a now Major Rock band, then look at their latest video. Quite the budget difference, wouldn't you say?
