I do agree that a lot of bands tend to sing in some generic American accent. Lost Prophets is a good example of that, I mean these people are from Wales! Here is a group who sing in their Welsh accent.

This might be off subject a bit but living in the UK we all notice one thing, when a group of lads are up to no good with other lads, they always start to talk in a London accent, no matter where they are from!

They DO sing in an accent. They just use editing to fix it so they can attract more people.

The best example I can think of is BFMV

Yes I wish I did that now, posted a link of the same band live compared to the studio version instead of two different bands but I think we both proved a point and both bands came from Wales lol.

Yes, it is poo poo, we laugh at it Down Under. But seriously though, one of the reasons Australian actors and actresses (with the exception of Sam Worthington) are able to so well emulate an American accent is because it comprises most TV and cinema content.

I find South African and Aussie get mixed up sometimes. I am able to tell the difference because I've worked with a South African plus played World of Warcraft with one who was always on ventrilo 24/7, but you can't deny most people get you confused :P

What's an "American Accent?" Our regions all sound different whether you in the Midwest with a slight southern draw, in the deep south, East Coast or even up north like around Minnesota and Wisconsin, people sound different in the States.

It is funny actually when people try to peg you from a region like when I used to live in Michigan coming from southern Indiana close to Kentucky I have a slight draw when I talk and people were guessing Texas, Alabama, Georgia you name it and then when I finally tell them where I'm from they are like really? That isn't that far away.

hahaha, I've never met anyone who thought the american accent was something to aspire to. Whether americans are stupid or not (I seriously don't want to get dragged into some kind of irrelevant argument either way) everyone associates americans with stupidity. I'm currently trying to lose my Australian accent (I'm British but was raised in Australia) because I don't want to be associated with the Australian identity that has been bastardised in the media.

I haven't seen a lot of people using "American" accents aside from in music and acting... It makes sense when people who's first language is not English take on an "American" accent though.

As a side note: With the exception of certain areas of each country, I've never seen a difference between how people speak here in Canada and how people speak in the majority of the US.

thanks for waiting in a long cue, but you know the answer, american born australian decent, raise in downunder and make it big in holywood. That is general case. The not so general, some common auss (including my friends) feel intimidate to speak in their own mother tounge when staying abroad. They think it will burden themself

Same goes for anywhere. If you heard a Geordie accent from Newcastle (or pretty muchany regional accent for that matter)it would be unrecognisable for most people who think they know what an "English" accent is like.

They don't "sing in an American accent," you lose your accent in singing because most singers will sing how the word sounds rather than how the words are actually pronounced.
