I recently got Norton and I really like it. I think its really useful. Some of my friends told me that it slows down your computer. I know that it slows down my web browser by 0.84 secs but I don't know if it slows my computer down. I use a laptop and play all my games on it so it would be useful to use all its speed. Its a good laptop:D

Thanks

If you have the toolbar up in your web browser then it might slow some, but other than that I never noticed any slowness in my computer.

Yea the toolbar slows it down web loading by less than a second but I don't think it affects your computer

I've never had any good encounters with Norton or Mcafee. They always have stupid pop-ups and system checks and all sorts of garbage that just gets in the way and minimizes the stuff you are doing. I do think that they slow things down.

Yes, Norton uses lots of system memory compared to programs like Kapersky, AVG, MSE and other similar virus programs. So yes it slows down your computer.

I don't use any anti virus. I'm not stupid enough to get my computer infected by clicking on every link, visiting websites with that type of mal/adware, accepting a fake anti virus etc.

IMO, all the anti virus does(besides protect those who like to infect their PCs) is take up resources. Whether or not they slow down your pc i guess depends on how well built your pc is

If you have the power, norton really doesn't slow down your pc much, i didn't notice much difference between avg and norton.

My laptop has 2.40 GHz but it can TurboBoost upto 2.93 GHz. Would Norton really affect it that much?

Commonsense.exe uses no resources and if used correctly is 100% effective 100% of the time. All ive had since the invention of the internet and i have been infected a grand total of zero times by anything.

If you use websafe there is a slight pause. I use the netbook version and it has websafe and you scan whatever startup programs you want that are questionable but if norton says they are safe there is no need to scan them at startup.

It shouldn't, at least not any moreso than other A/V products. Norton has a bad reputation because of some of their older products, but they've really cleaned up their act over the past couple of years.

It doesn't slow down my PC at all. But I have an i7 and 12 GB RAM, so that might help. Considering that it is currently using less CPU than task manager, I don't consider it to be a resource hog.

I normally use Microsoft Security Essentials, but a couple of days ago my sister got a new laptop and with it came a years subscription to Norton Internet Security 2011 for 3 computers. I thought I may as well give it a try since I'm getting it for free. There's no doubt it takes up more resources then MSE, but that is to be expected, Norton is a full featured anti-virus software while MSE is very light in comparison. So far I'm liking it though, and it not as much of a system hog as some of you guys are making it out to be, it tries to get most of its stuff done during system idle (or in other words, when you are not using your computer). I've had no problems with annoying pop-ups, but if you do you can set an action for Norton to automatically take next time that event occurs, it also doesn't interrupt you while you're gaming.

Norton is a bit of a resource hog from what I've heard(I've never used it so I can't say from first-hand experience). I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials if you have to use an anti-virus program.

Norton is clumsy. It's also very hard to uninstall and causes all kinds of problems even after it supposedly is uninstalled so you might just be better off keeping it though.

Anti virus software will slow down your computer when doing a full, comprehensive scan. It should not affect you otherwise, however.

Windows already has all the antivirus you'll ever need. The only thing that's causing it to suck is human stupidity.

I've heard a lot of bad stuff about Norton but I've also heard that they're not much of a system hog any longer.

And also, even you're careful, you can still get infected, you don't need to visit any super shady sites to get infected. You can infected by just visiting normal sites, wowhead and wowwiki are two regular sites for example. I wouldn't be surprised if Gamespot has had some issues before too. http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=25519272 For example.

Most virus's count on the user being the administrator. The chances of getting infected are slim if you're running yourself as a regular user (and only log into an admin account when you absolutely must). If a virus can compromise an admin account, it's most likely going to be patched by Microsoft instead of an antivirus company.
