Ok, well, I was just reading some comments on avatar the movie. It went like this:

guy1- I hated it, way overrated

guy2- I thought it was cool

guy1- No, you were just looking at the visuals

Ok Ok Ok, stop right there.

I am pretty sure I am correct in saying that good visuals can make a movie better. I dont know what this guy is on. It is like if you were critiquing a dreamworks show: "you were just looking at the visuals" OK, sure even though the WHOLE THING is CGI (60% in AVatar)

Ridiculous.

Ever heard the saying "All flash, no substance." Well thats exactly how I felt about Avatar. Sure the effects were kinda cool... but the story was incredibly predictable; plus I dunno but I just disliked most of the characters for some reason.

Majority of films are predictable.. but still are successful.. obviously, there must be something to this concept then. Maybe, people like familiarity.. maybe people like what is predictable. Predictability doesn't make a film bad. After all.. It's ultimately purpose is entertainment... and not to change the World.

I thought it was an excellent movie. Yes, the visuals were possibly the greatest looking thing to ever grace the big screen, but the story and characters are also fantastic. The best bar-raising, grand adventure movie since Jurassic Park, IMO.

I'm fine with people not liking the film. But when those people tell other people who liked the film that they only liked it for visuals... Well, that does get on my nerves.

I thought the movie was awesome.

Really, really great movie and in my Top 10 ever.

Yes, the effects were also cool, but the characters and story were also great.

Sometimes when a film goes in the opposite direction than what is expected, people get pissed off at it.
If the Na'vi lost, and/or if Jake and Neytiri didn't hook up, then people would be complaining about that.
Sometimes a story goes the familiar path simply because it's the best option.

I went in to the movie having NO IDEA what it was about.

I saw it had an 8.9 on IMDB and it was the most expensive movie ever made. This pursuaded me, and I loved i.

I would probably nominate Star Trek above Avatar for movie of the year, mostly because the story was original.

Not many other movies this year were that great though. At least I can't think of any.

question is
will it break even?
most films are considered flops if they need the DVD/Blu-Ray sales to just barely make it over the costs...
that's my big question with this movie...

... The only thing I was impressed with was Cameron's artistic, read em.. ARTISTIC vision.. Not the actual technical side of it.. CGI in my eyes all look good now a days.. To me it was the artistic value, the believablity of the characters and plotline, as well as the overall message to the movie..

Its only been in for 2 weeks (?) and it has already made like $6xx,xxx,xxx, it cost $300,000,000 i think, so that means it has broken even though I don't know how much they ACTUALLY make from the movie theaters, they have a good chance though

Actually to me they were quite appealing characters that seemed human like.. And they were able to avoid the uncanny valley syndrom, which was quite amazing seeing as they made up the majority of the movie..

They were really quite attractive, in a stIyized way. Their displays of emotion were one of the triumphs of the film's tech.

The movies pace is so good, you won't notice the length, you will be drawn in by then.

In fact I couldn't believe it seemed to be over so fast, the really good movies, like this one, make you forget about the time.

Well, they look nice, I guess, but not nice enough for me to
endure Na'vi sex. I mean... Ew! What was the point of that? "Hey, we just made love in front of a magic tree while being watched by a God. Cool, right?" How is that comforting?!
I'm sure I'll see it, but I have to have a lot of interest in a movie to go see it in a theater; I see 1-2 movies a year in a theater because I find the movie going experience so unpleasant in general. Nothing I've seen or heard about Avatar has given me the level of interest that I can't wait for the DVD

Did I say it was God awful? To me, JP certainly is not a movie worth paying movie theater prices to see, particularly since it mainly served as a tech demo for the breakout of CG. If you enjoyed it, bully for you. I'm allowed to consider it a mediocre, utterly by-the-numbers movie though, right?

Er, sorry? You really think they are that ugly? The design of the Na'vi was the high point of the film's artstIye in my opinion.

psn8214

so are blue wolves-elves-indian creatures cool? seriously...they are horrible...they have a bit of elf, a bit of wolf...a bit of indian...a bit of cat... a bit of pan...and A LOT of blue...that is just not cool!

Yeah, they are, in my opinion. Sorry you don't feel the same... :P

here I just edited your sig, just because I love you and everyone in this board...

way more appealing to the eye than the previous one...it will certainly help your vision remain pure for many many years

I admit it, I lol'ed. But seriously, I fail to see what you see in the Na'vi that makes them so 'unattractive'.

I'm fine with people not liking the film. But when those people tell other people who liked the film that they only liked it for visuals... Well, that does get on my nerves.Nerd_Man
