If you're interested in the programming side of things, take a programming course, I haven't done a lot of research on the matter, but I'm personally skeptical of any course that includes the words "video game" or "game" it their title.

Well what other areas are there besides programming? I can't draw at all so I know I couldn't do anything artistic.

Depends what you mean by game designer the top guy who designs the overall game does so because he's the top guy usually not because he's been trained in any particular way. If you mean art design then take digital art, if you want engine design go for software engineering. If you just generally want to be in the games business then go for computer science and minor in digital art, that gives you the broadest possible coverage of the industry. An odd class in creative writing or business wouldn't hurt either if you get the chance. I would note that art is largely portfolio based so just the minor won't get you anywhere, you have to show you have skill.

What about 3D modelling and texture work? Concept artists make up a very small part of the art department, if you look at the credits of any game you'll usually see the 3D and 2D artists far outweigh the concept artists. There is also the production side which deals with budgeting and managing people, making sure everything happens on time ect. I know someone at my uni who has got offers for that but that was based on a good portfolio piece she did. There's no real qualifcation to aim for with that route, the best i can think of is experience of managing a mod team.

From what I've seen jobs like that ask for degrees in Mathematics, Electrical engineering, and Computer science.

all safe degrees, even if game design doesn't work out.
