NY ousts sex offenders from online games and companies are helping them. Is this one step closer to the nanny state?

I am on the fence with this. While I do think sex offenders or at least pedophiles do need to be kept away from children, I think it is up to parents to ensure that their kids keep up with online safety practices. Someone convicted of sexual battery due to just touching woman and her pressing charges could keep someone from playing their favorite games online, even if their conviction had nothing to do with kids.

What say you?

Not comfortable with this move because I don't know the extent of the crime that makes you register as a sex offender in the state of New York. Pedo's being purged? Totally on board with that. Someone who flashed his junk as a frat prank at a college football game (which actually IS a sex crime in some states if children can see it) is not exactly in the same ballpark.

I agree. In Michigan you get put on the sex offenders website for public urination. I think most men have been in a pinch were we had to use the back of a dumpster for a urinal.

During my undergrad years I was out with a couple of buddies visiting some bars. About midway between one bar and another one buddy realized he really had a bladder issue. As in, it was happening whether the time was right or not. (He had a LOT to drink at the previous bar.) So, he decided to slip off and find some relief. Sadly, a nearby cop spotted him and he got a public urination ticket. Poor guy was about two weeks away from submitting his law school applications, which require you to admit and explain any misdemeanor or above criminal offenses. In my state, public urination is a misdemeanor. He spent a whole lot of time explaining that particular part of his applications.

Another wrong move by a "libertarian minded" police state with the highest incarcerate rate in the world, where big government is only big when it comes to controlling your daily behaviors.

This is rediculous. Provided they have served their sentence, there is no need to be "ousted". Obviously, some of the more severe offenders (i.e. pedos, child pornographers) should be monitored when they get out of jail, but iirc that is standard anyway (with a parole officer, monthly checkups to a psych, etc).

If anything, I'd think that more time spent gaming = less time spent raping, amirite? Also, you dont really play games to meet people in person.

I'm not sure why that would matter if XBox Live & others allow you to play games for everyone. You can't get to Call of Duty without going through the online service. Considering the legal idiots on some of the services I really don;t have an issue with this if it's already in line with current registers..

What really happens in the United states of the incarcerated, is that people are first of all very likely to be sentenced to more than 20 years in prison, then they finally come out old and senile, they're monitored to closely, they basically can't live anywhere, can't go on the internet, can't even visit parks, you have basically total isolation within the society. Not only that, but you name is posted on public sex offender registry for every member of the society to see, you make friend with someone, you know that someone will eventually find out and leave you, so you don't make friend and stay in total isolation.

But to prevent integration is to promote reoffending, this is a concept the US justice system never grasped.

ban them from being able to talk online and being able to send messages, this is wayy overboard even though I think 99% of registered sex offenders are deserving of the punishment but that small small margin of people who are wrongly registered on there should not be punished because public humiliation is punishment enough

Sex offender is a broad word to simply deny people certain online freedom. I'm against this. Keep going backwards New York. I hope you implement nap time in work as part of the nanny movement.

More effort should be put into educating children on online safety, not restricting other people.

the problem with the sex offender registry in this country is that not every person registered is a monster. there are people on that list who had to register as sex offenders because they had consensual sex with a 17 year old.which is ridiculous.

if the sex offender registry had only the worse sex offenders (rapist and child molesters) then i would support this move. however that is not the case. so i don't agree with this law.

i think parents should also make sure their kids aren't playing an online game that is rated T or M. There are too many kids on live playing games that are clearly not for them. But the parents still allow them to go on there. me personally i would never allow my kid to go on live until he or she is a teen.

There's a lot of variability in terms of who ends up on the sex offender registry. There are rapists and child molesters of course. But you also have people arrested for public urination, or because they were 19 and had a 17 year old girlfriend and the parents called the cops. I'm not really comfortable with something like this. And frankly, I think our sex offender registry laws need to be reformed.

Is there even a problem of online gaming being used by predators to a significant extent?

How would a sex offender have a chance to pick up kids in an online game? He couldn't hardly get a word in between the racial slurs, profanity and trash talking.

I couldn't find where it listed any criteria. However there is 23346 people on the sex offender list living or not incarcerated in new york state and only 5900 were purged so far. Thats 25%. So I would error on the side of there being some criteria not listed such as predators involving a minor. Which, if factual, then yeah I am okay with it. It could be that some weren't reporting their online persona etc. We don't really know.

Course I guess it is possible only 25% had active online subs to the providers that are in participation.

The bureaucrats are on double duty on this one...all that work and what will it really solve? Very little...wayytoo many ways around this red tape..This is going to do nothing...Kids are not going to be "safer"...This is nothing but a politician flexing his chest with a pen a paper mentality.

The deterrent is not taking away or restricting. Its providing help. Why not provide therapy to the offenders? A class at school for the kids on the subject? Orrr god forbid the parents talk to there kids about it? So many other programs that would have a higher chance of success then this false sense of security BS.

EDIT: Why the F**k does this site always bundle words together...

This is fine. Just like I think it's fine that a neighbourhood should be informed if a sex offended moves in.
