O' Reilly is doing a segment on how people are ignoring obvious violence, such as a clerk being shot and killed and people continuing to shop. He blames this on the internet somewhat into the video stating:

"I think it's getting worse because of the internet, as we just saw the YouTube video, because life is now becoming like a video game to these people. They see horrendous violence, all right, right in their [screen], then they see it in real life, and it's not as real or shocking as it was." -Bill O' Reilly

"...Think about the internet deal here, because life is becoming like a video game for a lot of people."

NOTE: About halfway through video they start to talk about women's groups. You can ignore that.

You will need to look for the video. To do this, go to the bottom, click on shows in the left column, click on the O' Reilly Factor. Click on the video with the title "Cultural Collapse?".

To be honest, I think O' Reilly would have had more of an argument with going after video games (which he did slightly, but he aimed more at the internet in general), because they have the interactive factor. Going on YouTube wouldn't be any different than watching a movie, and movies have been around for quite a while now. We would see people becoming less reactive to violence a long time ago if YouTube is a problem.

Opinions?

Sounds like O'Reilly's attempts to break Obama is failing so he's now looking for something else to rouse the rabble to rabblerouse.

Yeah, but people are still stupid if they don't react to the sound of a gunshot.

it's not that...and like games I edon't blame either media for creating crime or violence...but some people...who are already ****ed in the head aren't gonna be able to discern that line...and unfortunately they go out and do stupid crap...no offense..but look at some of the ****tards that have been in and booted from OT....you know they are a headshot in Halo 3 away from snapping and shooting up their school....

So, these people who ignored the violence happening in front of them would definitely not be there to do just that if we still had natural selection.

Well, then the people who are this violent by nature should not be allowed near things that might bring out that violence. Besides, he's arguing that the internet makes people less sensitive to violence when it happens, nothing to do with the people that cause the violence.

You can't honestly think that being more exposed to violence doesn't desensitize? I'm not against it but the fact still remains.

It's all related though....and the iNternet and TV is just part of it....stats also accomplish the same thing...seperate emotions from the act....

Yes, but people who don't react to people trying to revive someone who got stampeded, a gunshot, a guy flying through the air after being hit by a car?

Even with all the time I spend on the internet, I'd be pretty damn shocked.

Most people are pretty easily swayed but what they are exposed to though. They can easily be desensitized.

O'Reilly is such a hypocrite. He denies that he had any influence what so ever when it came to the shooting of George Tiller, dismissing him as a crazy person (and rightfully so. I felt that O'Reilly's influence vis-a-vis Tiller's killer was incredibly overblown), and yet when it comes to this alleged desensitization of the general public he blames the Internet and video games. And this isn't the first time he's created a scapegoat for what he sees as problems with the general public.

I for one have been desensitized by images I've seen on the internet. I remember when the movie Gladiator came out I felt nauseous watching it, but now I can look at gore pictures without flinching(not that I go looking for them :P ).
