Apparently, one of the people Obama is considering for Chairing the Health committee is Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, a pro-choice Catholic who is in a dispute with her Bishop for vetoing a law that would limit abortion (by the way the position of Health Committee tends to influence America's abortion policy). Meanwhile at the USCCB meeting next week, Archbishop Naumann, the bishop that is in this dispute with Sebelius could be elected as head of the Commitee for pro-life policies.

So that very well could entail a clash of Church vs. State (the Church will win because Obama's presidency can't last more than 8 years). Obama should not appoint Sebelius to his cabinet, he should know that provoking the Church will not work to his benefit come 2010 and 2012. Now let's hope Obama's sense trumps his ideology.

She's my governor and I don't consider her catholic considering her stances on abortion and other issues, I really don't think that he should appoint her.. She's nothing special. And the support of the church in a country more than 20% catholic..

If Obama was to appoint her and provoke a conflict with the Catholic Bishops wouldn't that go against his stated desire to unify the country. Obama should try not to anger the church, since the President should try not to do anything that would divide the country.

1. If the Church gets real angry they can summon Sebelius before an ecclesiastical tribunal and maybe excommunicate her, how would that look for the Obama administration? 2. If Obama angers the church he could easily lose reelection in 2012.

I don't see how. Pro-life catholics didn't vote for Obama, and won't vote for him next time either. Pro-choice catholics won't be angry if he appoints this woman, since they agree with her. All this will do is make people who already don't like Obama like him less.

I don't see it as deliberate. I strongly doubt Obama picked her specifically to anger the Church.

I say pick her. Anything that hurts his chance in 2010 and 2012 can only be deemed a good thing. It won't provoke them, but it wouldn't be a bad thing if it did.
