I'm sure everyone out there has heard the statistics, and some of them are pretty alarming. No matter which way you slice it, obesity in American adults is on the rise, and obesity's prevalence in children is even more cause for concern. I was just curious, what does everyone else think is causing this?

Personally, I think it's a combination of factors (most things in this world are, aren't they?). You've got people growing up with unhealthy lifestyles, who then pass it on to their children. Feed a kid fried foods and plop em' down in front of a TV while you go do something else, for example. Then there's the concept of portion control, which seems to be disappearing as fast as the next McDonald's can pop up. Ultimately, though I think the root of the problem is peoples' relationship with food (eating when stressed, etc.)

What do you guys think? Who, if anyone, is responsible for obesity in America?

Obese adults: a combination of portions and the price/availability of unhealthy foods.

Obese children: parents' fault.

People are always trying to pin the blame on outside factors...

The only thing to point the finger at is genetics and eating too much.

Who is responsible? Um...the people who are fat are responsible. If they are children, their parents are also partly to blame. I grew up back when obesity wasn't this big of a deal and I received nutritional education at school. I'm not fat.

Fat people are the cause of their own fatness. Sure, a Spicy Double Baconator from Wendy's looks good and tastes godly. But so does a pastrami sandwich from your local deli.

The abundance of food advertising and association of food with happiness. Plus, fast/junk food is easily accessible and fairly cheap, so many people will choose it over healthier foods.

On Supersize Me, in the segment where Morgan showed various pictures of faces to some young children, Wendy and Ronald McDonald were more recognizable than Jesus and George Bush.

A little of genetics, eating way too much, not getting much exercise.

For children pretty much the reasons I said before but I partially blame the parents as well.

The obese person.

Outside sources of course share some of the blame, but it's the individuals responsibility in the end. No one forced the obese person to eat to that extent, they chose to do so.

I say obesity itself is due to lack of exercise. It's been known that exercise with a poor diet may lead to an unhealthy heart but not necessarily obesity.

Lack of movement/exercise is to blame. The food is a contributing factor but not the reason.

I don't think you should count out my first point either, though. Unhealthy foods are usually much cheaper than healthy alternatives.

If you are fat, its your own fault.

While the creative legal system in the United States can find a way to fault nearly anyone else for your own stupidity, unless Ronald McDonald is at your house cramming Big Mac's down your throat with a meat mallet Se7en style you really can only blame yourself.

You can get a sack of apples that will be a healthy snack for 2 weeks for $4. Or you can buy 3 bags of Doritos for $9.

Just an example.

Even so, eating responsible quantities of unhealthy foods will not make you obese. Unless you're eating fast food everyday, of course. But that would be expensive to do that.

balderdash!!!

There is no where I have been in Canada or the United States were you could not make healthier choices, perhaps not "healthy" choices but there are certainly better options at nearly every fastfood joint around.

Even if McDonalds is the only place within a 100 mile radius of your home or office to get food, you don't have to cram a double Big Mac with large fries with a jumbo coke down your word hole.

Regarding that (sort of): I realized the other day that people who are obese look rather normal to most people. Only those who are morbidly obese attract attention. I see middleaged guys with huge guts, and people think that is normal.

Maybe some more fat jokes are in order to make people embarrassed about the way they look.

theres certainly a rise in unhealthy food, but our big issue is the fact that people are moving around a lot less than they used to.

People getting larger is only going to be their fault for not being more active, like running every day. But to be honest, you also have to factor in the fact that there are less jobs that involve a lot of activity at work, and of course the availability of fast food and the relatively low prices has a small factor. Some people need to realize that it is in fact cheaper to eat at home than it is to eat McDonalds.

The problem rests with the individual. Let's take you and I for example. I smoke. You don't. Who do I blame? The cigarette companies? No! Myself. I am an adult, and I make my own decisions. Too many people, unfortunately, are reluctant to take responsibility for their actions...

Well i don't think its the food only it also has to be the lack of movement. I work in Time Square New York and when i do have work and i get my lunch break i have like 3 affordable/nearby choices McDonald's, Burger King, or Popeye's. And although i hate it i have to eat that **** for dinner/lunch whenever i work(3-4 times a week) BUT i am not fat and no where close to fat. I work out all the time and do what i can to take care of myself (sports etc). I have noticed ever since i started my job my stomach has felt terrible and i use the bathroom like crazy but i havent gained 1 pound.

As you said it's a mix. It's the idea of instant gratifcation, for one. It's easier, it's faster to head up to the drive thru and pacify your kids with a toy and a meal. TV and video games have become the new babysitter. One could say it's parental fear that's keeping their kids indoors; feeling it's safer than allowing them to step outside into a world that could very well take their lives. It's the way the school system is trying to protect itself. Never before have I thought that schools would ever say no to games that promote action like tag or running on the blacktop. Obesity in high poverty areas is not uncommon and a big reason for that is, unlike more affluent areas, there are fewer outlets when it comes to youth and summer programs and, also, fewer grocery stores that offer healthier foods. It's a mix, but one thing that must change is the parent's relationships with their children and their own relationship, as you said before, with food that they will pass down to their offspring.

fast food is the cheapest and most available food in the country. People choose places that can eat quick and cheap. America is about living in the fast lane, fast food is incorporated in that. People have a choice to eat healthy, but choose not to for time, flavor, and price.

I blame coporate American, and the government for not controlling every single aspect of our lives. No, I am kidding.

I blame the people. You know it will make you fat, and unhealthy, so why eat it?
