(CNN) -- Protesters chanting, "Whose port? Our port!" marched on ports in Oakland and Long Beach in California on Monday, part of a planned effort to shut down shipping facilities along the West Coast.

The protesters, affiliated with the nationwide "Occupy" movement, set out in the pre-dawn hours in Oakland, Los Angeles and Portland, Oregon, to shut down ports in an effort to "disrupt the economic machine that benefits the wealthiest individuals and corporations," according to organizers.

Similar efforts were planned for San Diego as well as Seattle, Washington, Vancouver, British Columbia and Anchorage, Alaska, according to the Occupy the Ports website.

CNN

So bascially now they are shutting down ports, a huge employer and lifeline of local communities, to continue their protest. It doesn't make any sense anymore. They aren't accomplishing anything but disruption of everybody BUT the 1% and government.

I hope support for this movement goes down even further after this...

That's what I just said... Everybody but the 1% and government is being effected by this. They are stopping people from going to work and stopping the importing of good that effects everybody. They aren't sending a clear message other than they want to disrupt our society as much as possible so they can be heard. However if their message isn't clear how are they doing anything but disrupting society?

It sure does sound like they're only trying to get media attention.

Banks and Wall Street I can see, but ports? Every single person in this country benefits from trade ports.

So... to protest against the wealthy elite, they set up their pickets outside the bluest of all blue-collar locations? I don't understand.

If dock workers don't symbolize the 1% in this country, I don't know who does. Just look at this wealthy bastard... all comfortable in his expensive work boots and plush reflective safety vest - I bet he can't even see us lowly proletariat, perched all the way up there on his fancy container ship.

It sucks that their actually interfering with people's day now. This and the "flash protest" (is that what it's called?) at places like Walmart, getting in regular people's way.

DIsrupting ports?... Yeah, time to get the firehoses and the dogs. If you can't make your horsesh!t nebulous point without resorting to this.. die die die. If this were a civil rights thing, I'd be all for it... or even if there were a single cogent demand. Not this... not this.

Here in SF, I've been hearing truckers begging them to not block the ports because it is interfering with their 99% livelihoods. Amazingly, the local Occupygoons have been talking about "shutting down the ports in solidarity with dockworkers" while the local longshoreman's' union has also publicly said "Please don't do this"

I never supported them in the first place, they are helping nobody. In LA those liars claimed their little protest area was clean...explain the bottles of urine chief. All they are doing is making it easier for the 1% as the claim to keep power.

This whole movement needs to either die or change direction now, it has become a joke. All they are doing now is harrassing innocent people and businesses now, besides disrupting cosatl ports is going to hurt the economy even more and cost more people their jobs (considering these protesters got their way).

What has this movement even accomplished so far? Nothing that's what, howis sitting around in tents in the middle of public parks all day like bums "sticking it to the man"? How is bullying black friday shoppers "fighting the machine"? It's just called being an A-Hole!

At this point OWS is nothing more than borderline communism....

That's where I have to draw the line. I heard about this on NPR on the way in. The occupy people wanted the labor unions and dockworkers to join them, but they refused. Citing that if would hurt the local economoy and small businesses. Occupy people didnt care. People in this country have every right to protest and picket public places, but you cant prevent others from making a living. Just because you believe in certain things doesnt give you the right to force them on others. They should be picketting outside city hall not harassing port workers.

So tea partiers can't hold OWS in contempt for their stupid actions today? The rest of us are, what difference does it make if those affiliated with the tea party also hold the same opinion?

however, i wouldnt mind a general strike in a city. Until stuff gets serious, nobody will pay attention. I dont know what to say to this act, it will disrupt the local economy, but maybe people might start paying attention now. Then you don't really know anything. Big retail chains depend on their shipments from ports coming in on time. Why is it okay that OWS disrupts things? The Tea Party never did that.

alright lets be honest, the tea party was always a pu55y movement. Until they got funded by the Kochs, they werent doing anything, now that tjhey have "power" all they rail on is lower taxes for "job creators" Heck i bet most of em oppose the payroll taxcut, just because its for the middle class

A p*ssy movement? They won Republicans the House and destroyed the filibuster-proof majority democrats had in the senate. If you consider that a p*ssy movement then excuse me while I ROFL for a bit.

When have they lowered taxes for "job creators"? I oppose the payroll taxcut, too. It's useless. The stimulative effect, I believe, isn't the worth the harm it's doing to social security.
