Im working on the power point for an archaeology presentation that is very prestigious. the requirement is to work with 2 others to make a 10 minute long presentation. One group member did well with giving me information needed. everything is perfectly ordered and detailed.

Ijust got my other group members work for the powerpoint and... Its completely useless.

literally, all she gave me was 3 slides. Each slide has a picture and, rather than coincise information that i can use, bullet points that just say "insert _______ information here." im not even kidding. completely useless.

Ive tried contacting her, but i am having no such luck since she is in mexico for spring break.

im asking OT, what should i do?

ah yes, the classic college slut who cares for nothing but making it to spring break and then the summer holidays. One time I got this kind of thing, I simply took the person's name off the project, and handed it in like that. Simply told the prof that she didn't participate in the project so her name wasn't on it. Made her worry about getting a mark for that course.

unfortunately its not so simple my friend. Its for a 15 minute long presentation, that cant be a second too long or too short. Im kinda in a position were i need to make this PP fitasmuch as possible, considering how its been only 2 hours and i only have the slides down for my other partner (mypart is last chronologically. the bombshell of the other partner is the part im working on right now).

Im trying to contact my other partner, the one who actually does her work, but she only ever reads her emails when the planets allign or when the stars are right and when cthulhu wakes up >.>

That is how the professionals do it.

I did that once for high school, the skank that worked with me *****ed at me for doing so. But since she did absolutely nothing and it was like a month or so away from the end of the year (and graduation) I couldn't care less if she was forced to stay back for another year.

I'm going through something like this right now. We're in a group of 4 - me and two others in the group work on the project and we do whatever we can to contact the 4th person but apparently he doesn't like to communicate.

I'ld kick her out of my team. Simply when you submit it you don't put her name down on the group sheet and she can fend for herself, i wouldn't bother chasing her.

You should learn to work in groups first. Try to make a well thought plan and assign tasks respectively. If someone doesn't do their respective task then find a replacement or tell your teachers about it. Simple really.

Thats nothing when I was in High School I had someone send me links to websites where I could find the information to put on the slides. It gets a little better when you get into to college because people try harder not to get bad grades.

Everyone complains that school does not teach them about real world situations ...dealing with 'difficult' peers/co-workers when something is on the line (grade, job, presentation, promotion, not getting fired, etc) is just such a thing This is a good learning experience for you

I hate working with other people on projects as well.

In your situation TC I'd just do the bits she was meant to do myself. I'd probably end up doing them better than if she had put in 100% anyway. And I'd make sure I told the professor about her lack of input.

Depends on my goal as a teacher TBH.

Students complain that their work does not reflect real life/is not something they will use in real life. ...having to deal with bad peers/coworkers where your success depends on the success of the group is the epitome of real life.

So if my goal was to teach that lesson, then every student would receive the same grade as the others in their group...no matter what.
-there will be people that do jack s*** in the real world and people that do most the work
If my goal was to measure something specific, then I would do a combo (average individual score with group score)

Yup. In my professional experience I don't think I've ever seen a project where individual contributions are measured. A project is "graded" on whether or not the scope is met in the timeframe projected. That's really it. The people that continue doing the bare minimum (or less) will get caught up on it eventually anyway.

Any sort of 'group' project is a farce anyway - one person always just does all the work anyways. But if it happened in my 'grown up real life' I'd still be frank ad tell the boss that X did none of the work. Just so I could say 'I'm not working with X again. I'll just do it on my own... again. But make sure I get ALL the credit this time.'

Talk to your teacher, and say you want a different partner. Or simply do it without her and say it to your teacher before the presentation.

I guess it depends on the type of working environment you enter into.

I'm just not the type of person who can work 50/50 on a project with someone else unless they are pretty much matched 50/50 with me in terms of the way we work etc. If I was expected to work with someone and I ended up putting in 80-90% of the effort in for only 50% of the credit, I'd either demand the credit I'm due, or I'd leave the company. I can't be f***ing around with work politics or whatever, it's just not me.

Luckily in my current position 'teamwork' is about exploiting and supporting individuals strengths and weaknesses, rather than 'carrying' someone because, for whatever reason, they are immune from getting punished if they don't step up.

I would say a great many people feel that way...but I would also say far fewer follow up on that (not saying you wouldn't though). There are some industries where one can do that. However, the vast majority involve at least some degree of office politics. I prefer to just manipulate people and situations to my liking (as the direct approach does not seem to work very well, sadly)
