I can't stand watching something on tv longer than half an hour. I get bored easily. I watched movies a lot as a kid, but as I grew up, it just hit me how boring they are. Don't get me wrong, if I go to the movie theater and watch it there I guess it would be ok. The only movies I remember clearly were Jurassic Park and Terminator 2, anything else is just a blur. So anyway since my parents bought a $4k hdtv and a blu-ray+hd-dvd player, I went on to a quick movie watching week to see what exactly I've been missing. So I rented Munich, Minority Report, Children of Men, Batman Begins, and Fight Club. Yeah not the best movies but hey you guys were talking so much about em, I decided to go for it. Ok lets get the ones I didn't really like out of the way.

Chilrden of Men, yeah ok I didn't really get into the story and thought it was kind of cheesy. The last scenes were good but that was it. Wasn't worth the wait. Next movie I didn't like was Batman Begins. I mean first the movie was real serious and then he puts on the costume and changes his voice, it began to be really lame and took me out of the movie. Was torture to watch the rest really. Last but not least...Munich. It was decent, but not good enough. There was no substance, not enough suspense. Total borefest for the most part. I mean, a movie doesn't have to have fight scenes or car chases, there are enough of those, but maybe in this case it wouldn't hurt if it had a little...more.

So those were the movies that sucked. Now the movies that were good. Minority Report was fantastic, everything about it was interesting and fun to watch. Then there is Fight Club. Just watched finished watching it now and it is the real reason why I made this thread. Fight Club is the best movie I've ever seen, it is that damn good. Everything in it was perfectly done and never came a time when I was bored and not interested. Anyone who hasn't seen Fight Club should go right now and see it. The best is when you see it the first time. It's the only movie that I actually watched more than once.

You have a Blu-Ray player? Get Memento right now. It may change your whole view about movies.

BTW it's about 1:45.

I also hate them, they for the most part are drivel and just rehashed garbage. Hmm, maybe I'll see Fight Club one of these days though, I saw the ending thats it.

Memento is fantastic. It definately requires your attention. You won't be bored watching that movie. Guarantee it. Anyway, it's kinda funny, cuz I was going to come into this thread with, "You hate movies? Watch Fight Club and tell me you hate movies." :P

Most of them aren't mainstream, though.

Admittedly, Hollywood is in the dark ages, but we've still got guys like Gus Van Sant and David Lynch putting out great work here in America and Wong Kar Wai and Chan Wook Park from abroad. There's still great stuff, but most of it isn't coming from the big studios these days.

I know exactly what you mean, I can't just sit there staring at the screen for long enough to watch a whole movie...ironically, I once logged a 9 hour session on SSBM...Christ, don't ask me what the Hell I did that for, cause I couldn't tell you...

Yeah, I love Fight Club but I think it is definitely overrated.

Funny thing is, I will be seeing 2001 in my horror film/sci-fi class this semester!

Yeah, Fight Club was real special for me, because I saw it early in the theaters, before I had any idea what it was about. I was hanging out with my sister and we were just trying to kill some time, so we were like, let's go watch a movie or something. Anyway, she was up for Fight Club, because she had the hots for Brad Pitt. And I was up for Fight Club because I thought it was just gonna be a movie about guys beating the **** out of each other. Anyway, we both walked in having absolutely no expectations, and we walked out raving about it. It's one of those movies that's better if you get no information about it, and no hype. You just walk in expecting "just another movie" and get one of the most original unique experiences you've seen in years.

Granted, it wasn't perfect. It certainly had its problems, but I'll be damned if it wasn't a fascinating little movie.

That's the best way to watch a movie (to me at least) -- knowing nothing about it or having a very general idea of what the movie might be about. I felt the same way when I saw Hard Candy and the only idea I had about the film was that it had something to do with a pedophile. It ended up taking me by surprise and I enjoyed the movie.

Don't get me wrong, Fight Club's a good movie. But it's not as thematically deep as people say it is. It's alot of fun to watch Edward Norton go bat**** insane over the runtime, and Brad Pitt is always awesome, but I still don't buy the idea that it's a revolutionary movie about the hypocrisy and materialism in society. Oh, the first two acts probably were, but I don't see what the third act had to say except that the main character was losing his mind. I loved that ending, though.

Yeah, my fiend and I never knew what to expect from Fight Club, and when it shifted gears the way it did, we were just blown away. And Hard Candy? That movie is so hard for me to watch anymore for obvious reasons.

How ironic; I just spent 156 minutes engrossed in Downfall.

Find out what kind of movies you are into?Kikouken

What she said.

Also, I've been to film school, watched and studied countless films - but even I couldn't sit through those films within a week. Go easy on the blockbusters next time. Perhaps throw in a comedy or a horror or something.

I like how you state that you hate movies but then proceed to offer your opinion on some you just recently watched.

Haven't you already effectively discredited yourself? Why would we listen to you if you've already admitted you don't even watch or like movies.

Someone who hates movies but recommends one is a lot better than someone who loves movies and recommends one. Here is why...a person who hates movies isn't impressed easily no matter how much the movie is critically acclaimed. It's simple really.

Ilived

You say the only movies you remember clearly were Jurassic Park and T2. I don't mean any offense, but how old are you? Those came out in 93 and 91. Many of the greatest movies ever made were created in seventies, eighties, and less so in the nineties. If you were only a kid during the 80s and 90s, go back and check out movies from that time if you happened to miss them, there's tons of excellent flicks out there.

And PLEASE tell me you've seen Alien, Aliens, Predator, The Terminator (the original), etc. Most of the movies today suck, they just plain suck compared to decades ago.

Good post....and well made. I agree with Children of Men totally, also. But I'm just the opposite, I'll watch just about anything and find something about it to like.

Except B-Grades! I HATE B-Grades that make huge releases! If you have a crappy budget and picked homeless people off the street to be your cast and crew, stop there and don't make your crappy movie! ARGH!

.... I'm sorry. So yeah, I actually have seen a couple low-budget movies that I liked, like Equilibrium :) And Serenity probably wasn't that big a budget either since Firefly went down so soon. But the point isn't that. It's that I know at least a couple people that don't really like movies, but I'm the total opposite. Wish I had a 4000 dollar TV :(

Wait, I'm confused. Do you have a problem with low-budget filmmaking?

Not all ^.^ Just when there's no talent involved, and they know it. When they're picking on a successful movie and spend all their money getting the rights to the name and then cobble something together (Walking Tall, Dukes of Hazzard). Like I said, I don't dislike them all, but most of them :)
