Well im going to no matter what any of you say, but im making this to see what people opinions are, and yes ik that there are threads SIMILAR but not exact to this ;)
thanks!

Just don't be a security forces.Wilfred_OwenWhy not? If i was joining the air force i would go there, but in the marines in going to go in for being an MP or an MP officer.
You need to grow up and earn respect. You probably live off of everyone you know and like free hand outs. Some seem to bash the military for Iraq even though Saddam's regime was evil with or without WMDs. Saddam himself even admitted he made it look like he had WMDS to intimiidate Iran. Regardless Saddam's regime were bad guys and commited crimes against humanity. People like you always speak out for human rights such as Tibet yet don't like the military over Iraq. Makes no sense lol Anyways you're prob just trolling for shock value anyways.Murderer

I would join the army or navy if I were you... they'll treat you better, and army especially gives better benefits (especially education concerning army reserve) BUT if u are insanely gung-ho and just dying to be a jarhead then go ahead-
oh, and heres a glimpse of basic training for marines.
just a bit more advice: I'm in the national guard and just remember the military is not out for you- so don't join it for selfish reasons- from my experience the gov't doesn't really give a crap about you- join to help defend civilians and to protect the man standing next to you in uniform... if you are joining for other reasons than that you may regret it- especially don't just join for the glory of being "a marine"- that will wear off fast.
Strange. I was in the Marine Corps as a rifleman for 4 years, and never murdered anyone. IRTT, if you think it's best for you, then do it. It's definitely a one of a kind experience. It's not the easiest thing in the world, but it is really not that bad. The only thing that really sucks are the hikes. :PMurderer

Well, i at first wanted to join the army, and me and my dad were talking about it and he thinks id be better off as a marine. Because they are better trained and stuff like that, he doesn't want me to be an army grunt on the front lines be used as target practice ya know? I want to help people or be security or law enforcement more then just going into a building to kill them. Thats also why i may join as an officer.just a bit more advice: I'm in the national guard and just remember the military is not out for you- so don't join it for selfish reasons- from my experience the gov't doesn't really give a crap about you- join to help defend civilians and to protect the man standing next to you in uniform... if you are joining for other reasons than that you may regret it- especially don't just join for the glory of being "a marine"- that will wear off fast.

I think its a fine choice ^^
It broadens the mind quite a bit (unlike what most people think), betters the psysique, and you do get to learn some quite good things.
OfcourseI am Biased ;)
Ok, read this before judging. Also note that this is my opinion and therefore i should not get reported. I think the Marines have one good reason to be in Iraq which is that they are keeping the country from civil war but, i don't think that the USMC or any other armed force is actually making a difference in Afghanistan. Obama and Brown said that killing all of the Taliban will stop terrorist attacks for good, but they will just get more angry at us and blow more things up. Also i dont think that you are killing the right people eg. civilians!
Also if you die then don't expect everyone to make a big deal because you joined the USMC and you knew you might get killed.
[QUOTE="Vuurk"][QUOTE="EMOEVOLUTION"]You are ignorant. Where do you think our country would be right now without the military? He's probably one of those punk-libertarians.Murderer

hes right, they murder innocent civilians!

What can you do when you can't choose to not fight in the war.
[QUOTE="EMOEVOLUTION"]You already got a spoonful of discipline from our fellow OTers, but I think you can take more. Learn some respect and grow up. These are the people doing the dying, getting their limbs blown up, and shot up to keep your behind safe inside your room on the computer.Murderer

EDIT: Don't forget how our country became the mighty country that it is today
I know a Spanish guy who is serving in bosnia, he likes being a soldier and is a soldier because the pay is good.
However, he can't get rid of the faces he sees of the people he has killed, once a former catholic, he doesn't believe in god anymore because of what he has seen.
We usually talk over the net, he likes his job, but tells me that he fights for things that would probably not be worth fighting for unless you are like him, unless you like money. He acknowledges that he fights for the guy that pays him, he says he doesn't fight for justice or righteousness or for the people, he fights for the big fish with the big bucks.
Join the military if you believe what you are fighting for is true and right, or join it if you could care less, getting paid is enough.
good luck.

I believe your description of your friend could be classified as a "mercenary", not a solider.
People joined the military for different reasons, no one can fault your friend for thinking and feeling that way. In all likelihood, he will probably experience PTSD once he come home. I just hope he would be able to cope with and readjust to civilian life eventually...
I have nothing but utmost respect for the military and the servicemen. Just realize the hardship you will need to endure once you joined, and be prepared that your worldview as you know it might be change forever.
Best of luck
We're an occupied nation fighting for another mans cause but I never try to talk my friends out of joining the service. The tools you will gain there can serve you elsewhere.

I'd personally recommend the Canadian Forces, but I guess the Marines will do if you lack citizenship :P
I'm going to join the PPCLI once I get outta high school. Hopefully become a paratrooper.I'd personally recommend the Canadian Forces, but I guess the Marines will do if you lack citizenship :P

i wish i had the guts and discipline to join.. marines is hard.. had a cousin go and he said it was hell, but you learn respect and discipline to the max

Your logic is flawed. Marines are front line shock troops. They're completely expendable and often have crappy/outdated equipment relative to the Army.
Case in point: the Marines were still using M60 tanks in the first gulf war when the Army had long since upgraded to the Abrams. Another example would be still using Super Cobras when the Army had moved on to Apaches.

Marines Basic Training is longer and harder, their PT standards are higher, they are much much more diciplined than your average Army Infantryman. Army infantryman are just bodies they use for occupation and other low priority missions. Marines are fine tuned machines who are outnumbered and sometimes not as well equiped when compared to the Army, but when push comes to shove its for a reason. The Army needs great equipment to make up for their lack of "skill" so to speak. Marines make due.
Back to the point. Yes you should definantly join the Marines. The disipline and morals they will instill in you will follow you for the rest of your life. There are very few things that look better on a job application than USMC Veteran. Your future employers will know that they are getting a disiplined, hard working, stand up guy.

Indeed. There's no point in joining the Army unless you're going through West Point first. While there are many Marines on the front line, the OP said he was going to be an MP.

Yep. However Special Forces Operators and Rangers get a great deal of my respect also. And TC i hope you know that you have to be an Infantryman for about 3 years until you can become an MP.
If it weren't people like you that join the marines, army, navy, and all the other ones then our world wouldn't be the same if even exist the way it does today. You should be proud of yourself for doing this and making the commitment, and I just want to say good luck and I hope it works out for you!LK-47Well thanks everyone! I have pretty good family support to. I think I'll be the only one in my immediate family in the military, unless my cousin stops chickening out on joining.
If you want to engage in the type of combat that they show in the war movies, then yes, the marines is for you.
If you want to join the armed forces but not get into a branch that as intense, join the air guard or army guard or navy/coast guard or something.
It all depends on what you want out of life.
