There were two versions of Batman Bayond: Return of the Joker. One was a family friendly version on VHS, the other was a PG-13 rated version that was released on DVD. (I happen to own both versions.) This was from the PG-13 cut.

In the family-friendly version, Tim shoves The Joker torwards some electrical equipment near a puddle of water. As he tries to get up, he accidentially grabs a switch and turns it on electrocuting himself. All the viewer see is him grabbing the switch, then it cuts away to a reactionshot of Batgirl as she hears his screams for the last time.

Actually, watch it in full. It's worth it. The Joker's death in the DCAU is classic... as long as you're watching unedited version. Difference between him just dying during the fight and getting outright killed.

Harley Quinn. She was an original character made for Batman: The Animated Series by writers Bruce Timm and Paul Dini (she was one of The Joker's psychiatrists at Arkham who ended up falling for him after hearing the tales of his abused childhood and such). She's unique in that the character was so popular that they actually wrote her into the DC Comics continuity. This comic book cover art has become somewhat iconic:

I've never seen this version. Wow, that was a lot darker than having the Joker electrocute himself. Excellent movie regardless though.

In the Batman mythos, it's scary because Batman actually fights the Joker with the intent to kill him. That knife throw was aimed right at the Joker's head, not his leg... The Joker learned Batman's true identity... and the Joker broke Robin and ruined his life (Tim Drake was never allowed to be Robin again, and Batman fought alone from then on in the DCAU continuity until the scene at the beginning of the Batman Beyond TV show). Also, it's kinda scary because you don't expect American-produced animation to be that real about death. Joker was shot in the heart by a dart, with the word BANG sticking up out of it. Perfectly ironic, but pretty grizzly if you think about it.

I love that scene, and it is revered by many DCAU and Batman fans. It's kind of funny how Batman Beyond was supposed to be more kid friendly, but was actually darker than the original BTAS lol. The uncut version of The Return of the Joker, which contains that version of the scene, was rated PG-13 btw.

same. its disturbing that Joker kidnapped Robin and tortured him to such an extent. And seeing robin actually shot Joker with a dart and kill him, much better death scene

aha, I remember around the time dark knight was put in theatres the store I work out alternated between the batman movies we had in store to display on the tv's. I had been a fan of batman beyond when I was a kid but I'd only ever seen the made for kids tv edition. One sunday morning (we get there 3 hours before the mall opens to get set up and other work done without customers around) we were watching the dvd version of it with sound and that happend, I was shocked aha

The original Robin, Dick Grayson, although I don't remember seeing him in the clip. Good clip by the way. I love the DCAU.

Honestly, people worry too much about this kind of stuff, I watched that version when I was a little kid, yes I found it a little intense but it really didn't affect me at all beyond that (at least not in a negative kind of way, if anything it made me more compassionate, I cried when Tim started crying), kids aren't as fragile as people like to think, the woodsman cutting out grandma from inside a wolfs belly with an axe anyone?

Back in B:TAS, he and Bruce got into it and parted ways. Dick went to another city and became Nightwing. I don't think Batman Beyond ever said what happend after that...

This makes me even more excited for Christmas. I asked for the the complete set of Batman: The Animated Series. I realize they are different shows but Batman: The Animated Series is just as dark, if not darker. I haven't seen the show in ages.

Did you watch Batman TAS or Batman Beyond when they were new? In comparison to his other crimes, this was the first time this Joker took it to such a level of insanity. To me, it felt like Joker had crossed the line, and you can see it from Batman's reaction. For a cartoon, this goes down as pretty dark in my book.
