BOISE -- A sobering report about the number of Americans behind bars is out – and the figures are almost unbelievable.

One out of every 100 Americans is behind bars in this country - a historic high. The United States now has the largest prison population in the world.

But Idaho's numbers are even more shocking.

One out of every 34 male Idahoans is incarcerated or on parole in Idaho. One out of every 157 females is behind bars.

Nationwide, the prison population grew by 25,000 people last year. The total number of people incarcerated in the U.S. now totals 1.6 million.

In Idaho, there are 7,382 people either in prison or county jails. Another 13,000 people are on probation or parole.

Brent Reinke, director for the Idaho Department of Correction, says crime has not increased but the lengths of sentences have.

He says if something isn't done now the problem will only get worse. Reinke believes we can't just build ourselves out of the problem.

He wants Idaho to figure out how to provide sentences that punish appropriately, but where possible, allow inmates to be part of society.

"We need to be looking at this from a systemic standpoint so that we can hold those numbers down, keep Idaho's working, keep the violent criminals incarcerated, but work as a system with our substance abuse and mental health area," said Reinke.

as if we didn't throw out enough numbers. wait until you hear how many juveniles are a part of the system.

those numbers in Idaho are incredible too. we will have those details at six.

Idaho should say that anyone sentenced to longer than a year in prison gets their fingers cut off.

thats a band u idiot"Celldweller is a Detroit, United States based band that was created by Klayton (formerly created music as the 90's project Circle of Dust), who writes all of the music and performs the majority of vocals and instruments on studio recordings. Celldweller has previously performed live with Klayton (vocals, guitar, keyboard, percussion, programming) and a full line-up of backing musicians. The band's sound can be described as Electronic Rock that incorporates elements from Industrial Rock, Nu metal, techno, trance and breakbeat." and its named after a basement not a jail cell

You can really only blame the justice system. There are way too many people in there with 25 life sentences and people who will eventually be killed in a few more decades.

It should be streamlined. If you are going to die in prison of old age they should kill you. If you are going to eventually die by injection they should kill you.

If you commit a sex crime you should be killed.

If you commit a crime against a child you should be killed.

If you kill someone else you should be killed.

etc

etc

etc

Im tired of payin for these dirtbags to live for free on my dime when they have no chance to be rehabilitated.

No basically i want the jail/prison system to do things to make people avoid going to jail period. I took a jail tour and it's not the best place to live but it's not horrible in the least if you plan on ruining your life. They should make inmates sleep on thin mats instead of matresses and control every aspect of thier life. If things like these were done poeple would avoid jail.

Also, the media music thing is basically saying how mainstream media and everything popular with it seems to have glamourized the prison/jail experience.

yes. also if a child bumps into me, falls, and cries about it, i will be killed for assault. :?

also, my teacher said it costs $50,000 to take care of a criminal for his entire life, but it takes $2,000,000 to use lethal injection on a criminal. something about taking alot of health tests to make sure the criminal doesnt feel any pain and court clearances, but i think she was just bull****ing us.

No, I think your teaching doesn't know what she's talking about.

The average cost was $22,650 a year per person in 2001, the last year for which figures are available.

Yeah im pretty sure your teacher was just an anti-death penalty spewing blow hard. This is why school systems suck. They arent trying to teach the truth they are just throwing their own agenda out there as fact in an attempt to create a more "bleeding heart"liberal tomorrow.

I dont think that's so bad. If you found out a neighbourhood had 100 residents, one of whom had committed a crime, would you decide to stay away from it?
