One thing that bugs me about totalitarian system's symbols.

How would you explain the fact that you'd get banned in an instant for having a nazi swastika in your sig, but it's acceptable to have a hammer and a sickle in it. As a reminder: total count of WWII Victims is estimated to exceed 55 000 000 human lives, while the amount of people killed during Stalin's rule alone is estimated as 60 000 000 lives.

I wonder what's the OT take on this matter. For me both of the symbols should be equally banned.

Because the hammer and sickle does not represent a current living hate mongering movement?

No never did. Got good grades. People understand me when I talk with them all the time.

Aw, then we probably don't have the same thing :( It seemed so familiar.

Last I checked communism and socialism aren't ideologies that promote genocide of people based on their religion or genetic makeup.

Also, USSR =/= hammer and sickle. The hammer and sickle symbolizes the unity of the proletariat and is a symbol often used to represent allegiance to a communist political party or a Marxist ideology.

You speak as if America isn't responsible for almost the total genocide of whole societies of natives. Maybe we should ban the American flag, too?

Nah, connecting a 50 year old flag design to crimes committed couple of hundred years ago is a bit too far stretched. The whole Thanks Giving Holiday, well that's another story:P

Hmm... just thought, TC, that you might be interested in this article. It's about a law that looks set to pass in Poland (I actually thought it already had).

Well, situation in the old eastern block countries is a bit different. Last 20 years didn't make the memories of repression fade away. It's not a surprise. In Ukraine one could get sentenced up to 15 years of jail time for telling a joke about Stalin, communism, or The Party.

This quote is win!

More seriously though, I would argue that no government in history managed to implement communism appropriately.

It's mostly what the symbols represent. The hammer and cycle doesn't represent hatred towards others. The Nazi swastika does. If I see someone that has a hammer and cycle in their sig i go "Oh , that person must be a communist" But if I see a Nazi swastika I'm most likely to say "antisemitic ass" See what I mean?. clubsammich91
That symbol appears on the cover of the communist manifesto. The communist manifesto calls for a "violent" overthrow of the capitalist system. To me that is as a threat of violence because I strongly believe in the capitalist system.
