A while back one of my online buds that I played with for 3 years died, and I tried to talk to my real life friends about it and they didnt really think of it as a big deal, even though it really is to me. Even one of the guys that played with us alot called me a pansy for wanting to talk about it. Is it wrong for me to think of a online friend as a real friend?

I've had a few other online friends but he was the only one that we actually talked about **** going on in our lives, and just make a room and run around doing nothing really all night. Even when I stoped playing games much I'd still get on just to talk to him about random stuff.

How id he die if you dont mind me asking. If you consider hima friend then you can mourn over your friends passing. Dont let other tell you different. It is not there feelings that are hurt.

No. I've had a couple people I played games with online pretty much everyday. I talked to them more than some of my real friends. I totally think an online friend can a "real" friend as well.

And that's really sad about your friend. :(

They're pretty much the same... My online friend thinks I'm a donkey hole and it hurts just as much as it would if one of my rl friends had said it(prolly thinking it, though... I'm kinda hard to like XD).

I'm going to agree with everyone that said an online friend can be a real friend. A friend is a friend - no matter how you know each other - which is not what defines a friend anyway. I'm sorry for your loss :(

There's nothing wrong with that. Even so, I think an online friend is very different to a 'real' friend.. and they're probably not a good idea either.

The interactions and type of bonds between real life friends and online buddies are not the same. But it does not mean one or the other is more or less valuable. You get out of friendships what you invest in them.

Online friends are different than in-person friends, but true friendship is just as real. There's still a human there behind the IM boxes and character avatars.

Same thing really. I've met some people I met from XBL first and one on the web. At first it's kind of awkward, but in 5 minutes you become as good of friends as it seemed through the web. I really wish I could talk to half the people through the net first. It allows you to see their personality much more quickly than in person without a wall of fake pretense.

That's really sad. I have to ask, how do you know when your online buddy died? He just hasn't been online for a while or for you did you have his # or something?

he died back in april, and dont ask me how, but one of my buds that use to play with us texted with him some, and somehow he talked to his sister, and his sister told him and he told me(in june). I just couldnt believe it so i looked for him on the internet. I knew his first name and sorta his last name schumacher( but i thought it was shoemaker), so i couldnt ever find anything, but after while of looking through obits for april i found him. didnt really hit me till I read the paragraph thing I guess his parents wrote about him.

I knew it was really wierd he hadnt been on for a couple months but sinceI hadntbeen gettingon much iether i hadnt payed much attention.

Online friend isnt the same as a real friend. Your online friend will never need to have your back in a tough situation(in real life not the webz) And people can be whoever they want.

I may get famliar with someones personality or playing style involving a game, but that is as far as go with it. Making attachments to the computer is not cool.

I actually kinda agree with Bronx. An online friend certainly isn't the same as a friend I know in real life. But that doesn't mean I can't have feelings for an online friend. I've developed some awesome friendships over the years with people I met over the internet. Friends are friends, but there definitely are differences between an online friend and a real-life friend.

Sorry about your friend. From age 15-18 I had a really good friend over Counter-Strike. He was a dude from NY. I played in a clan whom I knew in real life but my friend got invited through me. I could say he was one of my better friends considering we played Counter-Strike every day. Once we got to college though, we kind of drifted away. I don't think people will understand friendship amongst gamers if it meant we that we only know each other through a game.
