On a whim I decided to pick up the latest Opeth CD, Ghost Reveries (latest studio release anyway). I had never really listened to them short of some Youtube videos, but I was blown away at the lead singers voice, his signing voice that is. I find his hard voice to be very deep and it's not really my style, but I like it in the small amounts its used on this album.

My question to longtime listeners is what can I expect from earlier albums? Typically from bands that I listen to I find they tend to get "softer" over time and often more melodic. Is that the case with Opeth? If I get earlier stuff will it be all screams or does the singer still sing?

Are there still really long songs? Like 9 minutes plus? Because I love that.

Just to give an idea of what I am digging on the album, I think Reveries/Harlequin Forest is perhaps the best song I've heard this year.

Thanks for any positive advice.

Well, their longest song is 20 minutes. Typically, there is harsher vocals than what they have now...he didn't sing anything mid-range pre-Ghost Reveries. But you'd probably like stuff like Blackwater Park, which is considered to be their best album.

Ghost Reveries is a fantastic album... Gotta' love "Ghost Of Perdition"!

Still Life is just amazing... Lots of clean singing in that album, with some wonderful melodic parts.

Blackwater Park is one the best albums I've ever heard... where you really get to here the perfect mix of "clean" and "death".

Also be sure to pick up Deliverence and Damnation... Those two records combined are just perfect.

Yeah, I like Opeth...

my favorite album by them is Morningrise. Their older stuff has more harsh vocals, but I prefer the softer stuff.

They're an amazing band, if you liked ghost reveries then you'll like blackwater park. a good mix of harsh/soft.

Too bad about the guitarist though, he was really good :(

he left. they have a new guy that they're goint to tour with.

I heard they are in the works for a new album, but that's just word of mouth, but I wouldn't be suprised if they were.

ive always liked opeth more when they have an even mix of singing and growling in their songs. variety is a very good thing when your songs are like 10 min long.

If you like the clean vocals then get Damnation. No harsh vocals on that album.

I'll check them out, but just to be clear I love screaming in music, but I typically don't go for the deep, death metal sound. I like stuff like Devil Driver, Trivium, Killswitch Engage and bands like that. I find that the Opeth singers voice is too similar to something like Six Feet Under, but there is a difference in how (Opeth dude) he does it, it's not so studdery like SFU.....it sounds like the guy is barking. Personally I think SFU is pure garbage, I need some nice vocals and harmonies to sweeten the deal.
