Windows 8 and a new Windows Phone update (Mango)are coming soon. Apple's "new" iPhone 5 is producing the usual rumor mill and their new version of OS X "Lion"is out.

Out of their Mobile and Desktop offerings, who is doing the best with the talent on hand?

Hm...I would say Apple. I do like Microsoft, but they need to stop charging 100 bucks for a standard edition.

Well to be fair Microsoft does a ton more to ensure compatibility with the thousands upon thousands of device drivers that get loaded on their OS. Apple doesn't build an OS for other OEMs to load on their machines thus there is less device capatibility to work on.

As far as innovation, I say that Microsoft has become a real winner under Ballmer. The new Metro interface for Windows 8 that gives you the option of your classic desktop as well has sold me that they are working really hard to create an appealling versitile product that works well with touch or KB/M.

Apple, however, adds minute features (and it some cases takes them away :P) and it is called innovations now-a-days. They have solid products but honestly since the original iPhone things have been more of the same than different.

I would say Microsoft. Windows 8 looks to be radically different (whether this is a good thing or not remains to be seen).

I would say Apple, as Microsoft seems to be have been playing OS catch up(and copy) since Vista.

Microsoft leaves its innovation to the 3rd parties

Apple probably, but they need to innovate more so that they can get their OS to be as good as Windows 7. :P

I think microsoft innovates a bit better. Apple however refines much better. They need to have a child called Softapples that can try and push out newer things but able to refine it in ample time.

They're still on their once every three years schedule. How are they releasing too quickly?

Fat chance of that happening with QT_. S/he is the eternal opposition, a true contrarian.

I dunno that's there's really been much in the way of innovation by either recently. (negating mobile OS's, as I have no plans to use them)

Wait, how does WP7 look like OSX? Anyways, with what I've seen of Windows 8 - I think Microsoft is innovating more for now.

This coming from you of all people in off-topic. Today's word of the day kids is I-R-O-N-Y.

CD_Rom already pointed out why. Both companies jacked windows/GUI OS concept from Xerox. Oh, and please don't tell me that you think the iPod was an innovation.

Right now? Microsoft. Both Windows 8 and Windows Phone 7 are far more innovative than anything Apple has done in recent years with OSX and iOS.
All time though? Apple.

That said, both companies hardly are innovative if you look at their whole history. Most of their developments were take from other companies and just improved/expanded upon.

Bah. You always propose arguments against whatever a OP posts. It's weird cause usually I don't see you in Conservative threads, but in the Liberal ones you're always around swinging a battle ax even when the discussion is lite... ;)

Regardless of the Xerox accusations, Apple and Microsoft still have been up to various things. The Metro Design Language has got to be the best interface I've used. Apple well...they makesolid hardware, however lackluster, but their only real innovation OS-wiselately was the original iPhone back in '07.

EDIT: To comment on your edit, to be frank I don't like Apple products much at all, so not just no, but hell no the iPod was no where near innovative. It just had seductive advertising that works it's magic over non-techies....

Both are hindering innovation at the same level by using ridiculous patents over everything they do.

Innovation =/= talent =/= good OS I'ld rather have something fast and powerful than something that tries to do some innovative artistic crap.
