Pakistan blocks YouTube for 'blasphemous' content......

hmm..Pakisan has ordered ALL internet service providers in all of the country to block youtube because of materials that are offensive to islam...

"ISLAMABAD (AFP) — Pakistan has ordered all Internet service providers to block the YouTube website for containing "blasphemous" content and material considered offensive to Islam, officials said Sunday.

An inter-ministerial committee has decided to block YouTube because it contained "blasphemous content, videos and documents," a government official told AFP.

"The site will remain blocked till further orders," he said.

Other officials said the site had been blocked because it contained controversial sketches of the Prophet Mohammed which were republished by Danish newspapers earlier this month.

Some 12 cartoons published in September 2005 by the Danish Jyllands-Posten newspaper sparked bloody riots in the Islamic world.

Five people died in Pakistan in February 2006 during protests against the cartoons, while a Pakistani cleric offered a reward of one million dollars and a new car for anyone who killed any of the cartoonists."

To surf the internet freely in totalitarian regimes you first need to Get Firefox.

The install extensions such as FreeAccess Plus! or Access Flickr that give access to banned sites in countries such as Iran & China.

If you contact the authors perhaps they can come up with something similar for Pakistan.

But what does it say about governments & religious organisations when they fear free access to information?

It works fine here now.

But here I would like to mention the expertese of Pakistanis.The day they blocked youtube here,thet's right it was only for a day,the manages to 'mistakenly' take it off air for the whole world.

Also it was not the blasphmeous content,it was some video showing vote rigging before the election.

I myself am a strict Muslim and I would actually encourage Muslims to see the video and post their replies in light of Islam and clearify the western misconceptions about it.

As far as internet here is concerned it is far cheaper than it is in the US. 256kbps connections here are available for $14 per month.In the US, I think it is $30.
